Our chickens roam around the whole yard and they've never laid a double egg. One time, one of out chickens caught three mice in one day, swallowed them whole, and then laid an egg the next morning that had an extra thick shell.

My parents used to have chickens and they usually did lay double yolk eggs, but one day, one chicken did lay an egg inside and egg. The outer egg was huge. The poor chicken's following eggs always had a bit of a weird shape.

You should have also brought up that a chicken can be egg bound. It may also be called some other names. It's when a chicken doesn't pass any eggs and they can all be stuck up inside. This can be fatal to the chicken.

I've had hens for over 10 years now. I've had only a few double yolk eggs and never a double shelled one. Hens are easy to have in the city and our city allows them, so we have some. Actually we had them before it was legal but who cares, our neighbors all got eggs so there were never any complaints. We also keep the chicken cook clean and smelling of alfalfa hay (used in the nest boxes). Hens have wonderful personalities as well. At present I have only 4 (we've found this the right number for eggs. I rarely have more than I need. My hens are Australorps, black chickens with iridescent feathers that show green and purple in the light. Mine die of old age only.

Side note: I’m glad to have the final answer on If eggs can be produced without a rooster present! My step dad and I were bickering about it once. I was arguing in favor of it only being necessary for a fertilized egg, but I didn’t feel like elaborating that (despite my experience in 4H and the county fair, etc) I only knew that detail due to an info graphic from Disney Channel back when I was little ;u; so I just gave up on the argument and left it lie, haha...
