What to Look for When purchasing a Cirrus

I believe HOBBS time is not engine time. It's whenever power is turned on. At lease in other aircraft's I know of.

A crack in the skin is worse than a hole or a dent. The tail tow hook will be scraped if a tail strike happened. Abused brakes will be costly, check those closely. Engine time will be lower and is the time the engine has been running above a base RPM. Hobbs is meaningless. Look for nosegear damage..hard landings will show up there. If FIKI equipped, run the system on the ground, if it does not bleed all along both wings and the tail it was not maintained properly and will be costly. If close to 10 yo a chute repack is coming up and costly. Have a mechanic do a mini-annual to make sure the engine and airframe are up to specs.

Two of the most important things to look for are in the caps system. line cutters are life limited like 4 years, I believe, from date of manufacture. The A/C is not airworthy if they are expired. You can't even get a Ferry permit. A&P is not enough to replace line cutters you must have special training and be certified. The parachute is life limited at 10 years same deal. The last I knew it was over $10, 000 to replace The chute. On the early aircraft the chute had to be replaced thru the exit hole in the top of the fuselage which meant composite work and paint touch up. The later chutes could be changed thru the opening in the aft bulkhead.

never knew that about the door fasteners, oh my how many I must have caused pre-mature failure of at taxpayer expense, bonehead design if that is true, and FAST FREDDY has a great point ! wtf? if it is 10k every 10 years it seems ever less attractive to fix my fuck up floating under canopy. cirrus had a good concept but all the young owners will foot the bill until a track history yada yada... stobe the hobo would have said fuck the plane take the train anyway
