The EU on Friday pledged €270 million in aid for Armenia, marking Yerevan's pivot to the West. But FRANCE 24's Armen Georgian notes that geopolitically, landlocked Armenia is "in a tight spot" since it relies on Russia and Iran for gas. The big question, Georgian notes, is whether Russia and Iran will play "the energy card".

The video mentions that Armenia's western pivot could risk the buying of energy from Iran at "preferential rates", but Armenia actually has an energy swap deal with Iran, where they send power in exchange for natural gas, so the price doesn't matter and both sides need this. Moreover, Armenia has transit options via Iran to buy (and even export to the EU) energy from rest of the Middle East, as it has perfect relations with Qatar and other Gulf states.

Russia does not give Armenia preferential rate at all, the price they charge us is similar to France. The trick they are using is as follows: they sell it at "preferential rate" to their Armenian daughter company which in turn sell it to us at higher rates similar to European prices. Russia also obstructs an import of gas from Iran at much affordable prices. We need to find alternative sources of anything that we import from Russia as they weaponising the supply of oil and gas to us.
