I have heard people say that Briony's apology was a selfish act. Perhaps so. But i found it heartbreakingly beautiful. Obviously, her sister & Robbie would never benefit from it, but . . . The fact that her conscience would not leave her be until she she made some kind of atonement, even if only in a book, was a poingnant reminder of how fragile our lives truly are. Give that hug, that kiss, that "I love you"... that "I'm so very sorry." Because, tomorrow is promised to no one 😢
