Introduction To Pharmacology.......

Pharmacology is the study of the actions, mechanisms, uses and adverse effects of drugs. A drug is any natural or synthetic substance that alters the physiological state of a living organism. Drugs can be divided into two groups. Medicinal drugs: substances used for the prevention, treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Pharmacology is the branch of science that deals with the study of drugs.

Defination....

the scientific study of drugs and their use in medicine.

1) Pharmacology

the scientific study of drugs and their use in medicine

2) Clinical Pharmacology

Clinical pharmacology has been defined as that discipline that teaches, does research, frames policy, gives information and advice about the actions and proper uses of medicines in humans and implements that knowledge in clinical practice.

3) Drugs

In pharmacology, a drug is a chemical substance, typically of known structure, which, when administered to a living organism, produces a biological effect. A pharmaceutical drug, also called a medication or medicine, is a chemical substance used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease or to promote well-being.

4) Pharmacokinetics

the branch of pharmacology concerned with the movement of drugs within the body.

5) Pharmacodynamics

the branch of pharmacology concerned with the effects of drugs and the mechanism of their action.

6) Toxicology

the scientific study of poisons

7) Chemotherapy

the treatment of an illness using chemical substances

Historical Landmark of pharmacology...

Pharmacology developed in the 19th century as a biomedical science that applied the principles of scientific experimentation to therapeutic contexts. The advancement of research techniques propelled pharmacological research and understanding.

Jonathan Pereira (1804-1853), the father of pharmacology.

Landmark......

1) Hippocrates ( 460-375BC)
2) Paracelcus ( 1493-1541)

Modern Pharmacology......

1) Oswald Schmiedberg ( 1838-1921 )
2) John Jacob Abel ( 1857-1938 )
3) Paul Ehrlich ( 1854-1915 )
4) Alexander Fleming ( 1881-1955 )
5) Ramnath Chopra ( 1882-1973 )

Scope of pharmacology.....

These subdivisions include: Pharmacodynamics, the effects and mechanisms of actions of drugs on physiological processes. Pharmacotherapeutics and clinical pharmacology, the use of drugs in the treatment of diseases. Toxicology, the science of poisons.
