In this Hiedalle video we talk about eggs of goldfish and the development of small baby fish from egg to adult fish. We also discuss how to diverentiate male and femal goldfish by their apperances and how to spot if they it is mating season. There are hundreds of tiny fish swimming in the IBC fishtank which was previously empty and is now a nursery with more fish than in the adult, parent fish tank.

APS stands for Aquaponic System which is a DIY small scale, closed loop, indoor hydroponic system to grow plants with the excrements of fish. A Hydroponic system using fish to provide the nutrients is called Aquaponics. As Fish the system is currently holding Goldfish.
Plants are a variety of leafy greens such as salad or spearmint and also fruiting plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries. The System is located in the Hiedalle creative space.

ACM Aquaponics Composter Module
The Composter module is attached to the Plumbing of the Aquaponics system and the dead Black Soldier Flies and self harvested Black Soldier Fly Larvae act as fish food for the Goldfish of the Aquaponics System. The compost is also cycled with water of the system.

The Aquaponic Cycle: Fish (here Goldfish) live and breath in water in IBC tanks. Their waste from breathing and eating is cycled from the IBC tank into the flow through filter tank as seen here:
Bacteria which live on surfaces throughout the system break down the waste products into Nitrate which are Nutrients the plants need to grow. The water is transferred via a pump under the ceiling and trickles down via Gravity back into the fish tank. On its way down the plants filter the water by using up the nitrates and cleaning the water for the fish - the Loop continues.
There are only three types of input:
Water (to compensate water used up by plants and heat, much less than in traditional farming methods),
Electricity for the Pump and
Food for the fishes (BSLF, Black Soldier Fly/Larvae)

Super cool! It always a good sign for a good system and happy fish when they breed :-) How long did it take roughly for the fry to be big enough to join their parents? looking forward to see their progress! I have 35 fry from my goldies but I keep them in a separate small glass aquarium and feed them artemia until they can eat normal fishfood. Then I am thinking of doing some kind of "nursery basket" inside of the aquaponic system where their parents are. Looking forward to your next update ;-)
