Heavy rainfall overnight on Wednesday left Pune city reeling under severe waterlogging, inundated roads and streets, and flooded homes. Normal life was thrown out of gear in Pune as visuals coming from the city showed people trying to wade through knee-deep water in flooded streets. Vehicles could be seen half-submerged. The district administration has announced schools will remain closed for the day.

While over 200 mm plus rainfall was received on Wednesday, there hardly seems any possibility of relief for Pune residents from rain as the IMD has sounded a ‘red alert’ for the city on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol said that around 40,000 cusecs of water was discharged from the Khadakwasla Dam. Water levels in the Mula-Mutha River, which passes through the city, also rose at several places.

By and large Mumbai is not as badly affected, the usual low lying areas and illegal settlements bore the brunt of the fury.

For your information, Vihar lake doesn't provide drinking water to the city and is used for supply to industrial units.
