Today, I'm reviewing Excalibur Hardcover Volume 1 by Tini Howard from Marvel Comics. This oversized hardcover (hc) collection jumps back into the world of Excalibur with a new team featuring Betsy Braddock, Apocalypse, Gambit, Rogue, Jubilee and more.

This Dawn of X era X-book also throws back to the classic Claremont Excalibur and has some loose connections to the X-men X of Swords event.

Have you read Tini Howard's Excalibur? Let me know in the comments below.

I have this in singles and need to read it all. Tini Howard was so nice when I met her at NC Comiccon before the pandemic. I have read and enjoyed her run on Strikeforce (Marvel) and am reading her Catwoman now. When I got to her booth she was being interviewed and I patiently waited until it was done. She spent some time with me talking about the comic, signed it for me and we had an awesome conversation about my Instagram as I had done some pictures of the comic and figures on there. Super nice and fun lady.

Good balanced honest review. This has had so many bad reviews among fans but I do plan to pick this up because I really loved Tini Howard's Death's Head mini series which actually had the charm of the original Marvel UK comic. The art is really good. The colours are very vibrant. I may get the cheaper paperbacks. I would get digital but I'm really unhappy with Comixology.

Looks like a fantastic read! Maybe one day they’ll release all of these X hardcovers in an Omnibus 👀

I enjoyed this book but it’s got nothin’ on the 80s series to me! That’s one of my favorite runs of all time, just absolutely wild and surprisingly poignant at times.

Nice review. I personally think Excalibur is a misstep. Felt like they focused on Betsy and the other characters fell by the wayside. This is more apparent post X of swords.

It's not the strongest of the Dawn of X titles, but honestly? And this might be because I've been a huge fan of Betsy Braddock since she joined the X-Men around the time of the Mutant Massacre, i loved it. I honestly felt like the storyline followed better and made more cohesive sense than the first 12 issues of Jonathan Hickman's X-men, which felt like a bunch of random unrelated stories to me (I've only read up to 12 in both series bc I'm starting X of swords now, so my opinion on both night change post that).

Now, if i were a big fan of jubilee, rogue and Gambit (none of whom i ever found interesting or ever cared about in any capacity other than sometimes using Gambit in the Capcom fighting games) i would definitely be upset, because they basically do nothing here. But Betsy's just recently got her body back after 30 years stuck in an Asian body that should never have happened in the first place, much less gone on for so long--they can take a backseat for a bit so Betsy, Apocalypse and Rictor can get more time in the spotlight 🤷

This was the only of the Dawn of X serie that I did not like at all, it just did not work for me. A lot of things just did not make any sense stuff would happen with no explanation.
