Timelapse footage captured a molting giant spider crab off the coast of Australia. The crabs gather in large groups for their annual molting to avoid being eaten by predators, according to Museums Victoria.

As I understand it, right after molting, the female is accessible for mating. I know that, here on the Gulf coast, a male with find a female near molt, and shelter her in a small depression.
He won't allow anything to harm her or for other males to draw near
He covers her body with his until after she sheds. He then will mate with her and continue to protect her until her shell hardens enough to offer her protection on her own
