Local here! Great highlight video of Amelia, it is a really cool place to visit. It can be an expensive stay longterm, and it is a bit crowded yes, but there is lots of charm around with much history. I've worked with our local museum (Amelia Island Museum of History) and they do pose a great option for tours of the island. If you focus your vacation strictly downtown, it is pricey, but the whole island has lots of hole in the wall shops and stores, like a treasure hunt. Perfect stay for anyone who wants a solid beach vacation.

I'm coming to this party a bit late, but I'm glad you enjoyed our island!
I will add it's a dog loving community.
Most of the people are very friendly. Because the island is so small, asking for directions may end with you following a stranger's car to your destination. I know I've done that a few times. Sometimes it's faster to go there than explain how.
The restaurants are great. With so many places serving excellent fare, new places are pretty much forced to step up or go broke.
There are three thrift stores on the island, so bargain hunting can be a blast. For the best prices, go to Cats Angels on 8th St. It's close to downtown.
Be sure to visit Bosque Bello Cemetery. The older part of the cemetery is to your right about a quarter mile from the entrance. Take your camera a do a lot of clicking. Even in broad daylight you might catch something to show to your ghost living friends!
