I did the functional test of fuel jettison on a B777-300ER yesterday. It has 3 switches. Armed switch, left and right jettison valve switches.

In case of a medical emergency where a passenger needs ground assistance, who makes the call to circle and dump fuel with the amount of time it takes and risk the person dying, or go ahead and do an overweight landing and risk permanently damaging the land? Have airlines (and I assume their attorneys/bean counters) already prepondered that decision? What if or have they already been sued from a case like this?

Is it really necessary to return to the airport? An aircraft can fly with extended landing gear? I think it is much cheaper to continue the trip rather than dump such amounts of fuel.
