Thank you so much TJFree, you have no idea how much time and effort you saved me, especially that I almost lost two days' work while on a deadline.
Agisubs might look a little intimdating at first, but this series literally made me glide through it.
Again, thank you so much!

When I followed these steps, the subtitles got hardcoded but there was no audio. I then tried, on the screen at 3:17, selecting the "Audio codec" tab and then checked the "Keep original audio" option. That fixed it -- the subtitles were hardcoded and the audio remained.

Guys, do not use VLC player. It is not designed to encode videos. Use VidCoder instead. It is free and an open source program. Unlike VLC, it actually has a progress bar and you know when it will end.

It has many options as well. You can set the resolution, frame rate and quality of the video. And of course, add subtitles. Even if you have a crappy CPU with barely any RAM, VidCoder has fast, very fast and super fast options. So that you do not have to wait. Keep in mind though, the faster you encode, lower the quality gets even if you choose the highest quality.
