I'm Dutch and I had a neighbor across the street that used to bury her turtle in a barrel every fall/winter. Some times beginning of October some times end of October it all depended on when he wanted to come inside too often. He never came inside the house unless he wanted a snack, tomatoes and a head of lettuce. Once he came inside too often and stayed in the kitchen, it was his sign that he wanted to go in to hybernation. She had him at the time I was her neighbor for about 40+ years. Her son has him now and we're talking it's been over 23 years ago i saw them last. In the spring he used to come up by himself and start scratching the barrel to be let out. They had a veggie garden for him alone along a veggie garden for their household. 🥰 Also by the him coming inside the house early and staying in the kitchen, we knew it was going to be a long cold winter. Neet stuff knowing how creature behave and go with natures thermometer and clock.❤

The first time my turtle did this, we all thought she got stolen/taken by predators. Come spring and we see her emerge, CAKED in mud and debris. So fascinating yet scary if you're not prepared.

We had a turtle for years. Every fall we filled his cage with leaves. He would burrow down more. Next march 20th, give or take a day, he would dig his way up.
