The ancient proverb, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” is clearly being demonstrated with the new agreements formed between Russia and Iran.

In an unsurprising move, the two countries have agreed to cooperate on circumventing sanctions for aircraft parts and repairs. An Iranian news outlet reported on July 26th that Iran and Russia had signed a cooperation agreement on parts and repairs and have also agreed to increase flights between the two countries.

Well Iran has great experience with keeping +30 year old aircraft flying despite sanctions so I guess the Russians have a good deal with Iran.

To have an idea of how outdated the Iranian air fleet is, an Iranian airline (Saha Air) was the last one in the world to operate the original Boeing 707, the first jet plane built by Boeing in the 1950s! They operated it until 2013 no less.

There is a saying, "where there is a will, there will always be a way". Why is anyone shocked by this, i don't know..

Producing aircraft parts without the manufacturer's consent especially for passenger planes involves a lot of engineering skills and know how. The reason Russia is approaching Iran for its aviation needs is solely because has developed technologies to reproduce aviation parts over several decades. These technologies involve material science, precision manufacturing, casting, testing, plating and so forth. The news here in this video completely ignores the fact that Iran has been producing aircraft parts indigeneouly for its air force and helicopter fleets for four decades. Iranian air force owns some of the most advanced fighter jets and bombers still today. To mention F-14, F-4, F-5, F-6, F-7, F-1, Mig-29, Su-24 there are transport aircrafts such as C-130, IL-76, AN-74, AN-140, B-747 and many others. So, there must be a very competent technical manpower that has managed to keep all aircrafts and helicopters air worthy over 40 years. No surprise Russia took note of that.
For those passengers aircrafts not among Iranian fleet that Russia operates. Iran can quickly manufacture those as parts specifications are the same across the fleet of a manufacturer be it Boeing or Airbus. Some parts are also commonized among different models to keep the costs low any way.

Aside from selling parts to Russia, perhaps the most significant aspect of this deal is the cooperation of the two countries in aviation industry, something that did not exist before because US pressure. This new cooperation will lead to co-research and co-development of joint aviation projects be it military or civilian. Both countries will benefit financially and technologically.

Happy for Iran and Russia new and mutually beneficial aviation endeavour.
I won 't be surprised if in ot distant future we see a whole new passenger airline manufacturer on the world stage by Iran and Russia that would rival Boeing and Airbus!

All good for the short term, but, Russia will not be-able to rejoin the international business routes with those aircraft. Furthermore, I think Russia will fall outside of the two major aircraft leasing companies risk appetite going forward. Band-aid for a gaping wound.

Oh dear! Airbus and Boeing aircraft flying with genuine Iranian spare parts? I think I will give these flights a wide berth.

Time to enact full secondary sanctions against the Mulas

Iran needs to build it's own fighter jets. They've already done it with drones.

You are aware that new flight routes are based upon need. So, are they going to fly empty planes between the two countries?

Passenger planes are not as complicated
As a F-14, MIG - 29, MIG- 25, MIG- 24, F-5, F-4, CI-130 Hercules, MIRAG 2000, too many to mention
IRANIANS overhaul all of them, ( Engines and Frame + redesign weapons platform )

I can't see how this association will benefit Iran, unless Russia is pouring money into Tehran for the cooperation. More maintenance on more planes, more custom parts manufacturing which I don't believe Iran has the surpluses for. Also, the smuggling of parts into Iran will become much more difficult since this cooperation will cause countries to work even more so to close these avenues. And the companies that engaged in the under the table dealings with Iran may not want to do so with the increased exposure. But the government of Iran will never miss the opportunity to poke a stick in the eyes of the west when given a chance. As for Russia, this seems to be more of a publicity stunt than any real accomplishment. I can't see Iran having that much more technical expertise than Russian plane makers. The number of flights advertised is also suspect, unless there is extreme hope on both sides that westerners are willing to go through Iran to get to Russia.

And how do they pay them? With Oil and Gas? Reverse engineering parts is one thing, but getting the right materials in another. Those modern aircraft do use special materials and metal mixes, that they simply dont get.
The Chinese bought some old car factories and parts tools and build cars with just their own materials. In crash tests, those cars folded like a cardboard. They simply did not get those high end steels to do the job.
Rebuilding a planes seat rest is one thing, a piece for a wing or the gear without the right material is a dangerous other thing. Those duck taped planes will never see any international routes again and are a total loss. A Russian, who loves his live will never set afoot in those planes again. enineering in the last half century is more a material science than a thing of good ideas. They simply cant compete

Well, it's not ideal but it's also not the worst kind of deal that I've It's reality after all and anyone who says that Russia is going down with sanctions is naive - to put it mildly.

why can't Russia service its planes or manufacture parts for its Boeing or other aircraft? Russian planes are not flying to many foreign destinations. lots of plane spare parts to cannibalize.
