Maybe it would work with a chocolate flavored marshmallow? Specifically, if you use a dark cocoa powder for the flavoring, that could make the marshmallow base dark enough so that you wouldn't need so much of the black food coloring to make the final marshmallows a vibrant black color. More generally, I think that it is going to have to be the case that whatever flavor you make it will have to contribute some of the final hue so that you don't need to add so much dye (maybe black licorice could also be an option) that it starts to compromise the texture

Whipping it up with the coloring in it could possibly intensify the color without having to use as much of it. I know for buttercream, using an immersion blender will deepen the color. It does take out quite a bit of the air though, which is why I suggested adding the color in early on in the process. Or maybe use a mixer, that would still introduce air into the mix?

Experienced baker here who works with this type of issue. Get a brown base like a chocolate one and then add black dye. That way you won’t use too much dye.

I’m an ECE and at work to make black play dough we add cocoa powder and black food dye. The cocoa powder gives it a darker base to start from to stop it from going grey

Use charcoal powder and the liquid dye together so it doesnt get too soft
Or get a gel dye instead of liquid

Emulsifying blenders help this problem and makes colours more vibrant do you dont just taste food colouring (e.g. pink-> red, gray-> black)

if it’s possible, try a black gel coloring + an immersion blender to emulsify it. makes a really dark color. i know it works for frostings but it might be worth a shot on marshmallows!

Dark choco powder and maybe add the color in with the other ingredients before whipping the marshmallow up. There are also powdered food colors. It is always going to be lighter because of the incorporated air, but I think dark choco like they use to make oreos would do the trick.

I do not recommend activated charcoal as it isn't great for people who are medicated as the activated charcoal removes toxins and thinks medication is toxins.
