It's a basic abusive and dominating partner trait, to try and distance the victim from his family and own friends. It's so common for the abuser to try and replace the victim's close circle with his/her own close circle. This makes the victim socially dependent on the abuser. If the victim tries to escape, the abuser made him/her distance himself/herself from their old friends and family. The victim is afraid he will be left alone, if he/she severs the link with the abuser, through which he has his new close circle.

And when we're talking about these roaches, it appears they were very much abusing Johnny's kindness almost as actively as Amber was. Seems like filth attracts filth. Not a coincidence they are the only friends who have stuck around with her. Everyone else distances themselves when they see Amber's true colors.
