Class Notes

Introduction
Cloud Computing is a design philosophy that breaks the Operating System and Applications from the Hardware
Web Applications
Are Created in Web Programming Languages
Generally Use Databases to Store Data
Clusters
Are Generally Used for Database Servers (MySQL, Microsoft Active Directory)
Load is balanced between servers in a cluster. If one server fails the cluster responds by not sending traffic to it.
Servers maintain the same data by using replication
Terminal Services
Based off of old Mainframe and Dumb Terminal Architecture
Now You Use Terminal Services Servers and Thin Clients
Thin Clients can be Hardware Devices or Software installed on a computer
All processing happens on Terminal Services Server and the Thin Client simply gets a "Window" into the server.
Application Servers
Uses Terminal Services but instead of providing a full Environment it only delivers a specific Application.
Virtualization
Uses Desktop Clients Software or Hypervisors to allow you to install multiple Operating Systems on to one physical server.
Hypervisors
i. Hypervisor is installed on the physical hardware to support the Operating Systems, and Management Software is used to configure each Virtual Machine, or Instance.
ii. VMWare uses ESXi as the Hypervisor and vSphere for the Management Software
Hosted Instances
Examples: Amazon EC2 , Microsft Azure
You Pay for Use (Storage Amount, CPU Power, RAM, Bandwidth)
Edge Locations are used by some providers to allow for faster access to servers over the Internet. You may be charged to send data from the main servers to the Edge Servers
Hosted Solutions
Public vs. Private Clouds
The Public Cloud is Cloud Computing used from Online Vendors
Private Clouds are environments on business/organization property that use Cloud Technologies.
Final Thoughts....
Security... Most Small Business Security is poor. Security for most small to medium sized business will be better when systems are hosted in the cloud
Local and Internet Bandwidth becomes more important with Cloud Computing. Even on the LAN you may end using all of your bandwidth.

VMWare ESXi

Man I love your tutorials. I wish you made tutorials in programming and database admin. Its soo clear and precise. I was getting tired of all these tutorial made by people who's accent you cant understand or some guy in the basement who sounded like he was talking to himself. Or even worst one made with a guy using a vouce synthesizer app. Presentation is everything and yours is great !Great Job. Thanks

I must thank this Eli the Computer Guy who actually went extra miles and was very clear. The best part was that he actually made an extra effort to summarize everything in the end that actually helped me refreshing everything. Great Job Eli. God Bless.

This guy does a great job explaining details of concepts so people can connect the dots of how a technology works.

Finally someone without an Indian accent explaining I.T. concepts, (no racism intended but you all know what I'm talking about).

I'm 45 minutes into this video, and it is amazingly good. I was going to quit at the beginning because the audio is not coming through on both headphones, but I'm so glad I didn't! It is really impressive for Eli to be so clear and easy to understand based on just standing in front of a white board talking and occasionally drawing a quick sketch. I will definitely watch more of his videos if they're all this great.

I see al those very fast paced cut-split YT videos, and then there's Eli, the man who explains everything clearly and slowly. Very nice.

Every marketing information for cloud computing points out the possible hardware failure that might happen. It is rare for hardware to fail. Also if the hardware does fail more than likely the data on the hard drive is just fine. The most important thing to consider when one considers cloud computing or onsite servers, would be control over your server that has all of your data on it. You either trust a cloud service to have control or trust control of the hardware/software by you at your location where you can actually see it there.

Those decisions have to come from an evaluation of the business needs first. I believe a hybrid situation would be best most of the time, however, that is just my opinion based on my past technical experience.

I come from the generation who actually built the server and then could see it running in front of me, so I believe in controlling your own data to only be saved at your location and in a backup. Of course you do need to always do daily backups no matter which one you choose. It is important to talk to a cloud professional about your own business operations, goals, and budget before making a decision. Also not being able to own the software you pay for does not seem right, especially after you pay more than what it would have cost to own it. Subscriptions provides lots of income to large corporations and is confusing people as to what the dollar is worth anymore.
