I'm working on an upper YA sci-fi and I incorrectly labeled it as hard because I explain the science of xenon propulsion and things like that. However, it has different alien races and more of an emphasis on character development rather than the exploration of scientific concepts. Thank you for this, Goddess!!

I like both, but I find the writing quality is often better from soft SF authors.

Soft please because I like the character emphasis more. Also, as a fantasy reader I can suspend disbelief and accept the world however it is presented without needing proof or detailed explanations that something possible. My only rule is the writer should not contradict themselves within the story about how it works. Hard sci-fi is a turn off when it drones on and on about dry boring technical stuff that I don't even know enough about to evaluate for accuracy. That being said, I have read some hard sci-fi where the writing is just so good that I can overlook the boring parts.
