What we've basically done to this Garden Pond is we have removed a lot of nutrients, mainly in the form of silt from leaves falling in the pond.

So now there's nothing really in here to create a lot of nutrients.

Sorry, there's not a lot of pond waste to release nutrients into the water of this pond so you not going to have as much Algae Growth as if there was a lot of garden pond waste.

But basically cut a long story short there is hardly any oxygenating weed in this pond, a few fish, one water lily and a couple of different types of water iris.

Nothing really to out-compete or help mother nature out-compete Algae for food.

So what we've done is, we are basically going to put plenty of oxygenating weed in the garden pond to keep the single cell (green water) algae out.

If we didn't do anything the pond might go green. Or we might even get blanket weed growing. Its mother nature's way of removing the excess nutrients out of a garden pond, even though we have done a full drain and clean it does not mean there are no nutrients for algae to feed on.

There are still nutrients in tap water, There are still nutrients in pond water.

Basically, you need to give Mother Nature something to process the nutrients.

On this pond, there is no filtration at all apart from the basic pond pump we put in to move water around and create that beautiful sound.

If you've got filtration on the other hand then that will help keep the pond from going green. If you have adequate filtration then you will have lots of beneficial bacteria to eat the waste. With the best pond design, you're removing mechanical waste so it doesn't build up and it does not start to feed the algae.

So how to keep algae out of a fish pond without a filtration system is simple, with plants, give Mother Nature something to use that nutrient up so the algae will not thrive.

I’m a pond owner in Egypt. Can you recommend plants and fish to keep the water clear here? Ponds are not popular in Egypt. Dirctor sun hits it daily, algae is a problem, and no chemicals available to use. Help!!

Mark, I`ve just found a substance floating on the surface of my pond that I`ve never see before, it`s as if someone had sprinkled green paint onto the surface and when I took some out it stank to high Hell, any idea what it might be ?, thanks.

Keeping algae out of a garden pond is easy, it's all about the balance, help Mother Nature fight the algae.

Or killing algie could be done from have increased water depth and using catla or surface feeders or using salt and vinegars solution 3ml/ lit

How about some Chinese algae eater fish? Drop a heater in the pond and keep at 76 Fahrenheit.

Algae and types are basic pH weeds, acidification of the water can eradicate it from pond water, High H2 in water may destroy bloom and phytoplankton from the pond, after the desired water clarity is obtained then treatment with calcium is needed to make it planktoned
