Love to hear Susan discuss Prince. She's a PHD and she knows what she is talking about.

"Open to all ideas" because when you're hypercreative you can take someone elses idea(s) and embellish it. Decorating it like a xmas tree. Which is how Steve Vai described what he did when Whitesnake sent him the demo for the album he played on with them. Producers do the same thing. Imho artists wouldn't be what they are without producers. Prince, Vai, Zappa, and many others are producers at their core not just artists.

I met Susan at AES. Like others have mentioned she is one of the leading experts in the field of music cognition. Hearing her talk is so fascinating

Hyper creative because they can't recognize things that won't work or are not feasible. These people don't listen to "can't" or "shouldn't". These people don't do well in a structured atmosphere when we do what works and won't/can't change. Works well for few people.

"Wishin' on a falling star, waitin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by a purple rain"~ Ventura Highway lyrics by the band America. I've always wondered if this is what inspired Prince's Purple Rain.

I don't really buy that. Almost every musical artist I've ever known has 50 Xs as much material written down or recorded and squirreled away that only they and maybe a few other people will ever know about than the works that they do get to finalize. Prince was only unique to the point that he did what he did with witnesses, in front of others, he literally lived in a studio. To be an artist is to be a hyper creative, period, there is no ''some have a trickle'' to it. There is, however, a ''some artists get their hyper creativity NOTICED'' and Prince most definitely was one of those. He didn't write more song or record more songs than others in his situation would have, he just got famous for doing so. I know at least 10 people who I guarantee you have never heard of that have over 100 songs in the can and another 500 that are fully written down but just never got the CHANCE to be realized.
