“Perk up”, comes from when coffee used to be made on the stove in a “percolator”, (or coffee pot). The coffee grounds would be in a small basket at the top of the percolator and water in the bottom. The water would boil on the stove and move up through a tube at the center of the percolator to come out on top of the coffee grounds then drip back down into the water. This would repeat itself again and again until all of the water had become coffee.
