When we were in Germany, A/C was indeed scarce, as it was when we visited the British Isles. They were having a heat wave and drought in Scotland, and no air conditioning was definitely noticeable. Even the hotel rooms which were air conditioned did not work with the efficiency we are blessed with here in the States. I grew up without A/C in Texas, and it could get brutal at times.

Customer service varies greatly from city to city and business to business. The East coast and west coast are the rudest the Midwest and south is the most polite and friendly. The west coast used to be more friendly but has changed in the last 5-10 years. Friendly service still exists but it varies from establishment to establishment. We live in the Pacific NW and recently traveled to Nashville, TN and surrounding area and found everyone so friendly, helpful and gracious.

It is rare that my AC goes below 74. I can’t afford it! I don’t consider waitstaff to be customer service (hence, total confusion when she started out), but waitstaff definitely want their tips. Restaurants also want repeat customers. Not all kettle corn is sweet, but that Boom Chicka Pop Sweet and Salty is delicious! The US is going back to hardwood floors, too—I hate carpet. A lot of folks in the US wish we had more six month leases. The 12-month lease sucks when you just need somewhere to stay while you’re house hunting or building a house.

Customer service is part of the job. Most people aren’t getting tips or commissions.

Everything she said is spot on. As an American who lived in Germany on and off for 10 years, I found the rigidity there stifling. I was called out on the street for walking barefoot. The culture of conformity is also what makes the rebels in Germany even more rebellious, truly edgy, than they are in the US, an ironically positive outcome. They make great art and films. The convenience culture I'm of two minds about, but I tell ya, running out of tampons on a Saturday night in Germany is a disaster. The Germans say, you've gotta plan for these things. What, me plan?

I live near Cincy (have both lived 1.5 hours North and South of Cincy) and my mother in law is German.
1) AC is a must and while we do get hot and cold, the heat is not nearly as terrible as the deep South. 2) Customer Service isnt all that great but Germans are known to be blunt and straight to the point, so having someone make small talk is a big difference. 3) We have a stupid amount of stores that seemingly never close. 6) Kettle corn is super sugary popcorn but not quite a toffee popcorn. Im not a huge fan. 12) The rigidity in Germany is crazy. All their housing too seems to be complete rebuilds when you move (meaning like kitchens and such have to be completely done with every new occupant.) Makes wanting to move a pain. 13) we love drive up liquor stores too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I feel like our Aussie friends are sometimes a Southern version of us. Though Y’all seem nicer.

It sounds like the US and Australia are quite similar in terms of lifestyle. We visited Munich a few years back and the people did seem less open, I didn't see many drive-thrus, and there wasn't a plethora of bars and pubs like here in LA. It really did seem quite different than where I'm from. A trip to Australia is definitely on our bucket list.

It's a way for individuals and families who
otherwise wouldn't have any way to legally
immigrate to the United States to get a green card
Entering the Diversity Visa lottery (aka green card
lottery) involves filling out a simple form online, and it
doesn't cost anything
