Ugh, Franklin had the crystalline x-ray data, which was a major accomplishment. But she did not focus on the paracrystalline form found in biological conditions. As a result, she was unable to deduce the proper molecular structure, aside from the obvious double helix. She admitted that herself. At that time many scientists were collaborating on this issue and they were all benefiting from one another. Watson and Crick had already built the model for DNA, Franklin's images helped to corroborate the data. Sadly, the data from Franklin's images were shared without her consent, but it was done so by her funding dept. So, while the data were not stolen, the situation was not handled well. Watson and Crick should have acknowledged Franklin's data at the time of the publication, but her data were not essential the primary structure. Her data were key in nailing down the specific twist of 34 A. Franklin was disadvantaged in that she was a woman in a predominantly man's discipline, so she was excluded from much of the open collaboration going on around her.
Finally, her lack of awareness of the dangers of her discipline likely lead to her premature death.
