I just spent 9 days in Panama. I loved it. But don't think I'll be back for a long time. Colombia still has my heart

just spent 4 months in Medellin. will be back in about a month for a few more months. I'm Panamanian-American and I spent like 2-3 years of my life there in total. I prefer Medellin for three specific reasons: the weather, the prices, and the people. I love my Panamanian people, but I fear that the new influx of international financial institutions descending into Panama since the transition of power at the Canal has caused for that very cold, arms-length, distant attitude to permeate Panamanian culture. the people aren't completely unfriendly, but they're nothing like Paisas in Medellin. you can't go into an elevator in Medellin without anyone greeting you, and you can't walk out of it without everyone saying goodbye. anyone you say thank you to consistently responds with "con gusto". it's such a nice touch that I feel has been lost in a lot of other places in the world, including in Miami where I live. it's like Latino southern hospitality in a sense. I love Medellin.

I've watched many many videos of foreigners in latin america. I feel that you guys coming from rich western countries are always looking for the perfect flawless place. Trust me the way you described Medellin is pretty much the general latin american experience. There is no 'flawless' place, moreso if you look at it from the lens of your own country. All over latin america you will find more or less the same stuff and the same issues. I believe it's more a work of acceptance more than a work of exploring. Accepting stuff as it is, without trying to make if it fit in an ideal model.
I'm not saying don't search, maybe indeed there is a place waiting for you, but I do believe there is way too much expectation.
Anyway my two cents as americans say, good luck.

Thanks for being honest about Medellin. A lot of people have these idealized view of Medellin. I lived there for 4 years. I’ve known at least 12 people personally who have either drugged or robbed. Colombians are friendly but they are always scheming and trying to scam you. Medellin is a pretty awful place once you get past all the weekend warrior superficial stuff

I spent the better part of the last two years bouncing around Colombia. Medellin is my second favorite city but the pollution really gets to me. Especially on the street level walking around. I agree with a lot of what you said. I haven’t been to Panama yet but plan to stop for a week because Copa Airlines let you stop and visit without penalty. Pretty neat offer. I’m from the southern US so I love the cooler weather and mountains of Colombia. Manizales is my personal favorite but Medellin is right behind it. Thanks for the post.

Good video. I am in Florida but have permanent resident visa in Panama. I agree with all your main points about Panama. It is safe. I feel safer there than som areas here in south Florida. Banking is good but sometimes I have had issues with customer service. I like how you can go short distances and be from new to old, mountain to beaches and pacific to Atlantic. I am hopeful the new government will rectify some of the problems with infrastructure that has been neglected.

Everyone I know who went to Medellin has left. SO many stories about robbery and worse, and in DN/expat areas.

Panama is safe and stable, that is a big Yes for must people

You are 100% correct. I am born here in Medellin; we have some of the sayings popular proverbs such as “dar papaya”, “el vivo vive del bobo”, “malicia indígena”, etc. They all exemplify the culture of dishonesty here and in Colombia in general. Of course, there honest people here but there are also very unscrupulous people here and that’s why the drug trade and other illicit activities have taken a strong foothold here. It’s part of our colonial legacy. It pains me to admit this but is true.

No explaining necessary. All you need to know is that you’ll find thousands of Colombians (mostly paisas from Medellin) in Panama but you’ll hardly find any Panamanians living in Medellin or any other city in Colombia.
That tells you a lot about both places.

Appreciate the video comparing the two Countries. I've had brief visits in Medellin and Panama City. Loved Medellin (people, culture) and I could tell, just like other major cities in the world there are good and not so good parts. Panama City - I want to go back and spend some time there. Both are beautiful ciites. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I was considering applying for a Colombian Visa being that I have a lot of experience in the country, but I'd hate to get duped out of a lot of precious time and money without any legitimate reason for a denial. Do you think that going through a different company or guidance would have helped? I know you said you tried twice, but I guess I'm just looking for a glimmer of hope in the grim-looking situation.

P.S. And to everybody reading this: I've been all over Colombia and it's a very diverse country with lots to offer from city to city town to town. So even if Medellín is not your thing, "don't throw the baby out with the bathwater" as the saying goes, because Colombia has a lot to offer and every city and town is different -especially outside of the tourist traps.

I got through my first "honeymoon" year in Medellín without serious incident (ironically, when I was the least cautious), but I guess as a result I let my guard down and in the three years since have had two home invasion burglaries (while sleeping in bed in my bedroom), a stolen bike when the lock was cut, and an iPhone pick-pocketed on the metro. My personal view regarding safety is it's not a matter of "if" but rather "when" you will become a victim, and I don't do anything here now without first considering the security implications. Much less going out at night for starters, as well as limiting who gets into my apartment. You can make it work here, but you've got to roll with the punches and never forget you can be a likely target.

In August 2024, I spent several weeks in Panama City, Panama, wearing long pants and all. I wanted to minimize my appearance as a gringo. I speak some Spanish, which helps me get around, but I still need some work. I plan on returning in July 2025. I aim to live in areas away from many Canadian and American expats. The biggest complaint I've read on some vlogs people had is that no one spoke English. I find that laughable. We're visitors to their country. I think learning Spanish and local customs is imperative to enjoy your stay.

I'm from Colombia and I love my country and people are generally very warm and social. Colombians are known for great hospitality and a very cheerful and inclusive vibe. However it is very unfortunate that in our culture we are always trying to take advantage of any situation where there is monetary exchange involved. It's shameful that you had to experience that 1st hand but it is the unfortunate truth.
