World first lithium powered Lexus RX450h !!

Does Toyota just use the battery system as a standalone/dumb device? E.g. Could one replace the existing NiMH battery with a similar sized LFP (Voltage and Capacity), paired with a proper LFP BMS? or is there a lot of programming you had to do to get the LFP packs to work? Is there canbus comms or something similar?
