The Best Way To Learn Calisthenics? (The Video Game Method)

If you guys grinded working out the same way you grinded on video games, you would be absolute beasts right now. I don’t game anymore, but I know for a fact that a gamer’s dedication to leveling up and upgrading their character is unmatched. What you don’t realize is that calisthenics is more like a video game than you think. So that’s exactly what I’m going to show you in today’s video.

I always imagine I am that video game character whose main purpose is working out. Every time I finish my workout my body starts trembling, that moment is when I'm levelling up. This makes calisthenics more enjoyable although it may seem silly.

Just want to point out that this can be applied to virtually any skills in any discipline. It's also why I love calisthenics. We all know we probably could acquire all sorts of skills if we trained at it systematically like a video game, level by level, and making incremental improvements every trial. However, in studying, or social skills such as confidence, it's hard to discipline yourself to train it systematically and its discouraging when you can't really measure your progress or show it off. But with calisthenics, the planche for example, you can feel yourself leaning half an inch further every day and also feel some muscle building. Even greater, consistent recordings on the phone isn't even hard, but can easily show substantial progress over time. Getting good at calisthenics made me realize all skills from all disciplines are the same, and you can apply your knowledge of "getting good at something like a video game system" to all parts of life!

Bro thank you!! I used to be addicted to dota and spent a whole lot of time just to improve as a player. Had to sell my pc and started calisthenics. Using this perspective of yours “leveling up” definitely gonna make my journey more interesting. Cheers bro!!

I started back lever training as a way to get the planche, but now I'm thinking I might continue down the back lever skill tree: Back lever pull ups, touch back lever, straight arm touch back lever.

If you like this way of thinking, you should check out Stephen Lows Overcoming Gravity. He has made skill charts for various bodyweight strength exercices and put all of them nicely into levels, so it makes quite a lot of sense to see that a Front Lever is roughly equal to a pull up with an extra 70 -80% of your bodyweight added, and a one arm chin up is about the same as adding 90% of your bodyweight. Great book, that helped my journey tremendously.
