Conflict: Gen. (Ret.) David H. Petraeus and Andrew Roberts in Conversation with Evan Osnos

How does what we’ve learned from the past 70 years of war help us comprehend what is happening in Israel now?

General David Petraeus, the outstanding battlefield commander and strategist of our time, and the prize-winning historian Andrew Roberts draw on their differing perspectives and areas of expertise to give a highly expert analysis of the situation in Israel, the failures of intelligence, the difficulties of the military operation ahead. They are joined by New Yorker staff writer Evan Osnos for a timely and penetrating conversation about the current situation, as well as their landmark new book, Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Ukraine.

Petraeus and Roberts discuss how often critical mistakes have been repeated time and again, and the challenge, for statesmen and generals alike, of learning to adapt to various new weapon systems, theories and strategies. They’ll reveal the story of how they came to write this book — and discuss its biggest single takeaway: the importance of sound strategic leadership, starting with getting the big ideas right. They will then share their perspective on what Netanyahu’s big idea is in the campaign against Hamas.

Recorded Oct. 18, 2023 at 92nd Street Y, New York.

I would think a “battle rhythm” would make your action predictable

When it comes to Israel, General Petraeus PhD is sure casual about conflicting his own military value system!!! So much that not even his co-authors command of english and sexy British accent is enough to hide behind.

I have to sat that the New York Times has had pretty shoddy reporting regarding the Palestinians and China lately.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Roberts calls a spade a spade.
One cannot reason with those that are self righteous and feel entitled to abominable acts.

For being a "historian" this British General doesn't know the difference between a democracy and a republic. I almost regret purchasing his book, but will read it with a much more critical/jaundice eye.

General Petreus was announcing the imminent collapse of Russia over a year ago, two years in and there's no end in sight for the Ukraine War. Also, after reading Churchill's biography, comparing Zelensky to him is at the very least 'abusively ignorant'. Apart from that, Israel has lost international support for their cause in general but very specifically American tax payer support which is crucial for them. All in all, a very limited and self-serving analysis for two men with impressive credentials.

I seriously question the host''s statement that Zelensky is like Churchill with a cell phone. Given his propensity to support Nazis, makes him more like Charlie Chaplin with a cell phone.

Imagine having this crazy saddam still in power or his even more crazy sons, probably with nukes, was hard way through insurgents, isis, allegations of warcrimes, strengthening Iran probably, but Saddam Hussein is dead, Isis is gone and iraq isn’t able to threaten anyone with any kind of weapons.n

The huge amount of American taxpayer $$$ that was totally wasted in Afghanistan & Iraq is hardly ever mentioned. Soldiers want to continue occupation forever if they have their way because it makes their job relevant. The Defense Department has never been able to pass an audit and Congress is to all in to never stop their funding or impose major penalties until it can do so.
