Honestly I think Emma is one of the hardest Austen books to get into (for me at least). Especially if you're not used to Austen's style. Emma as a character can be pretty hard to stomach, which is deliberate, but I think it can make a difficult first impression of Austen stories. She's a really cool character, but maybe not the easiest to appreciate at a first read.

Personally I find the characters in sense and sensibility to be a good introduction, and the tension is not as high. The comedy isn't as ramped up as Pride & Prejudice (which is the first Austen book I tried to read), but I kinda struggled to understand the nuance of the social satire the first time I tried to read that one anyways. Northanger Abbey would also be a good starter I think. Just my thoughts.

Pride and Prejudice has everything that Emma has, and more. But, then, most of Austen's female characters eventually gain insight into their original perspectives.

Totally agree about the fascinating cast of characters, but in P&P there is far more depth to an equally interesting group. Maybe the ME, ME, ME narcissist element of Emma ( it's in the title) is more in keeping with our time .

Also, unlike P&P, modern women can inherit wealth from their parents, have their own money, own property, can vote, can define their own sexuality; can become firemen - especially in LA, wear what they want, become PMs, have access to air fryers and M&S - so who needs a wealthy husband????

Will definitely give Emma a re- read to see what she learns about herself, and what lessons, if any, she has for the modern woman. Thank you. Really enjoy your vlog!
