Fun fact: Bismuth is actually radioactive, but it’s so weak it would take Quintillions of years for half of it to decay.

Interesting fact. During the Cold War; the Soviet Union designed several of their submarines to be powered by a lead-bismuth reactor. This reactor used the melted lead as a shielding and cooling agent to regulate the reaction temperature. However, because of the low solidifying temperature of lead, it meant that they had to keep the reactor running constantly to prevent the temperature from falling below the critical number, at which point the lead-bismuth would solidify in the reactor and piping, making the entire power-plant useless. This happened to several Soviet subs which had to then have either their entire power plants ripped out or just be sent to the scrapyard.
