How to say BONJOUR in French

The key is to think of Bonjour as a 3-syllable word and to make the correct French R so that you don't roll the OU and the R sounds together as we English speakers are tempted to do.

as a native French speaker I'm really impressed by how flawless your pronunciation is!

I learned this, only this. Was a bad idea because I don't speak French, I probably annoyed a bunch of locals making them think I was a local at the start.

This is so helpful. I felt ridiculous trying to say it authentically on my trip so now I need to go back, having watched this!

Thanks, this is great! Living in southwest France 6 months out of the year in a village where only two people speak English.

This was really helpful. I've been learning French and it really annoyed me that most of my pronunciation was fine but somehow I still couldn't say bonjour correctly! I felt like even after a lot of study I was actually still at the beginning because this is the word you're supposed to learn first. I think what it is I've said this word and heard this word incorrectly so many times that I am too accustomed to saying it wrongly. This video illustrated a good way to deconstruct the sound. I never knew it was an 'oo' sound even. I was just trying to turn the 'our' sound a bit more Frenchy with the french R structure at the end but it still didn't work that well.

Fascinating. And so fundamental to basic conversational French.

Very helpful, thanks! I'm more familiar with speaking Hebrew than French and the r sound in Hebrew is also made in the same place as the French r sound, well actually I feel that the Hebrew r or even ch sound is a little bit further back or behind where the French r is coming from. This is my first attempt at speaking the French r property and I'm experiencing a little slide back, so the r sounds a bit more gluteal than it should. It seems that in French there needs to be some air pushed, so the r sound is a bit more airy than the Hebrew sound. I'm not a language expert but for me these sounds are very close. Anyways just an observation, great video.

Hi David, just beginning my second week of a two week vacation in Paris. Before watching and implementing your video the Parisians would respond in English after my response to their Bonjour. After watching your video they respond in French! Great job.Maybe it's the black scarf I just bought and started wearing around my neck ?😊

I’ll be visiting friends in Lausanne, Switzerland so this video is very helpful! Sometimes, listening to words from electronic dictionaries is not enough. Merci!
