The ability to gain muscle is really just that simple. If you can lift more weight for more reps then you did 2-3 months ago, you know you're on the right track

Mr Heart! Thanks for these videos. I'm in bad shape, but not for much longer. Watching your videos has given me a real kick, really lit me up. Why? Your stuff makes sense, and I know. 25 years ago my friend asked what I wanted for my birthday, I'd seen an ad for a book by Mike Mentzer in a muscle mag, so I said 'that.' It arrived, he was skeptical, we read it and tried one workout. He was no longer skeptical... next 15 years, we trained heavy duty style, got ridiculed by just about everyone, then got ridiculously strong. It was like us against the volume training world, who all thought I must be on steroids when I got way stronger than they were. I got stronger every single workout for years. Then, my friend died, I got depressed, stopped training, got back into it briefly, then got frozen shoulder, and I've been out for months. Im in terrible shape, but watching your videos has reminded me how awesome training is. Im in my 40's now, but I know I can be in shape that kicks the shit out of 20 year olds. Thank you Mr America Heart!

Thanks John. I'm an RN, former Marine and been lifting/training for 38yrs. Not a competing bodybuilder. Over the years I've begun questioning nearly everything in this industry. I haven't seen much evidence that well trained people like us get very much more muscle mass after a certain age. Once you've hit your peak I think it's a matter of staying strong, healthy, flexible and lean. Your muscles will stay within a certain range of mass regardless. The major changes that others notice and covet are nice dimensions, lean body etc. Just my opinion though. Seems to ring true from what I've observed over the decades.

I’m 60. Just supersetted chest with back, 4 exercises each 4 sets, one of Arnold’s favorites. First time I’ve done it in years. Had a two day rest so I went for it. Finished up with 3 extra sets of chins.

Recently I shortened my rest periods, reducing the length of training from when to just over 40 min 👍I currently rest approx 1 min, down from 1.5-2min

Great advice my man 😊. Another thing I personally need to keep in mind is to maybe stay at the same intensity for a few weeks after I’ve increased the weight or reps. I’ve found that looking back over my years of lifting, the times I’ve gotten injured were when I increased intensity with nearly every workout. After a few months of that it seems my tendons and joints couldn’t keep up with my increases. That brings a question: is it fact or myth that muscles get stronger more quickly than our tendons and joints do? It seems that has been the case for me, but perhaps it’s in my head? Also wanted to let you know you’re looking quite buff John! Inspiration brother! God bless.

Thanks for making this video! It’s really that simple in just three points. Found myself overthinking these things or just not considering them. Huge help for soccer and gym training thanks! 🤩

One of the best ways to increase the intensity is to emphasize the parts of the repetition that are the most demanding while moving the resistance in a slow, deliberate manner.

What about doing reps slower. Time under tension. Would that create new muscle growth?

4. Do eccentric movements to a count of four in strict form to your starting point whether you’re pressing or pulling.
5. Train past failure in strict form with a spotter and do eccentric movements to failure.

Intensity in the gym is a lost art these days. everyone wants do less to get more.. sad.

I am a little conflicted. I thought the decreasing the time between all the sets tilts the needle more towards cardio. But you are saying it can cause more muscle growth?

Great video. What do you think about drop sets and super sets to increase intensity too? Thanks.

Cutting the time down sounds great, but, cut rest periods too much, and you will not hit the same reps for subsequent sets, which reduces intensity.

What’s the difference between intensity and progressive overload then?

Not to argue John, but those seem to be ways to gauge whether or not your workout is making you stronger or more fit. Not ways of increasing intensity. Just my opinion. No arguement.
