Ark Nova Review in 60 Seconds

Ark Nova received a lot of hype so I was initially a bit skeptical. It has a high degree of luck, given that the game revolves around collecting unique cards and building them onto your zoo: sometimes things just don't pan out the way you'd like. But gameplay is simple enough and the game is fun enough that I am willing to overlook some of the frustrations I typically have with a game involving this much luck. Plus, the theme really draws me in!

Hi.I cant figure out how to buy the petting zoo, the reptile house or bird avery. Do you use the build action and pay 2 per hex like normal buildings?

This game was such a fucking ball ache to set up, learn and actually start playing. There are so many icons and so many lil rules that you kind of just concede to learning along the way which made the first playthrough full of mistakes and illegal placements of animals. Buuuut once we got through the first trainwreck of a playthrough, we were all so into it and wanted to play it again. Just an overwhelming amount of components, cards and lil mechanics everywhere. So many ideas packed into one game.
I'm looking forward to playing it again and I hope teaching it is easier than learning it through the rulebook (which I think is really poorly written). Thankfully the icons and icon glossary are pretty good.
For such a light theme, this was a pretty insane roller coaster ride and can't help feel it could be stripped back a lot more and still be quite fun.
Having said that, I don't really like Terraforming Mars so maybe it's just not my type of game?
