Little Child- The Beatles (Guitar Cover)

Показать описание
Thanks again to @MichaelSokil for lending me these guitars. I wouldn't be able to do many 1963-1964 covers without them
Little Child isn't one of the Beatles most popular songs, but they spent a lot of time working on it in the studio. Recorded on September 12, 1963, the backing track consisted of John on rhythm guitar, George on lead guitar, Paul on bass and Ringo on drums
But wait...didn't John play harmonica on the backing track? Photos from that session show John on harmonica and George on his Gretsch. Nope!
I looked at Mark Lewisohn's book The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions. He says that after choosing the final take (7) of the backing track, John overdubbed his 'regular harmonica' onto take 13 and his harmonica solo onto take 18. Paul's piano was overdubbed onto take 15
This confirmed to me that John did not play harmonica on the backing track, so he must've been playing guitar
Guitars are not generally very audible on Little Child, however I was able to find many instances where you can hear one or two of them. I studied all the available isolations- Rock Band, youtube AI isolations, my own, etc. And what I found was really interesting
George's electric is the most audible. He's using the middle or neck pickup on his Gretsch Country Gentleman into a Vox AC-30. During the verses he's playing stacatto choppy chords, similar to his parts on Hold Me Tight
John's guitar is not very discernible, so I had to make up a lot of what he probably played. There are certain moments where you hear a brighter guitar playing chord inversions different from George's. Especially when the harmonica solo begins, you hear the bridge pickup of a guitar chugging on low E5 chords. I believe John was using his Rickenbacker 325 on the bridge pickup into his AC-30
I'm using Michael's 1982 Rickenbacker 320B, which is a reissue of John's 1958 325 'Capri'. He modded it to be more John spec- an added bigsby, a bowtie bridge, replacement pickguard. It has very old flatwound strings on it
And I'm using Michael's 2016 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman on the middle position. Both guitars are plugged into my Vox AC-30C2X
HERE ARE ALL THE MOMENTS THAT I DEFINITELY HEARD A GUITAR IN THE ISOS:
0:05 George can be heard playing these stacatto E7 chords, emphasizing the D and G strings on the upbeats
0:15 George plays a full sounding A bar chord
0:16 There is an instrument sliding up from the F-sharp to the low B. I couldn't tell for sure if it was Paul's bass or George's Gretsch, but after listening to bass isolations I didn't hear a slide
0:41 George hammers-on an open g-string G to 1st fret G-sharp
0:43 George very audibly plays these E chord stacattos
0:45 George is heard playing these two A5's
0:46 George plays another hammer-on, and hits the G-sharp again
0:50 A full A bar chord is heard here
0:54 This part is probably the only place where you can hear guitar on the album mix, without isolation. I believe it is John chugging on the Low E5 chord, because it's got a brighter sound than George's Gretsch. George also can be heard doing his warm stacatto E's right after
0:58 George can be heard playing these two E7's
1:00 George plays a single E note on the d-string before the A5's
1:02 I did hear some rhythm strumming from John during this solo section. It almost sounded like acoustic guitar in one isolation, but I ruled that out because I heard his electric elsewhere
1:04 George plays some more single note E's
1:07 George's B5 chords match the 'I'm so sad and lonely' melody rhythm
1:10 George can be heard playing early on these fast stacatto F-sharps, emphasizing the Bb note
1:15 The Eb note of the B bar chord is heard here, on the upbeats only
1:31 An A7 chord is heard
1:32 Two F-sharp 7 chords are heard on the upbeats
1:41 John is heard playing C-sharp with the high F
