I think this was more human operator versus computer-driven ship. Which is completely accurate, given how much more talented Kirk is as a captain compared to Ransom.

Though realistically, Kirk probably would have won before the battle with one of his "Kirk Summation Speeches".

There is a tech age difference but what overcame the Equinox here is difference in class.
Equinox is not a capital ship.
