C&O / WMSR 1309 | Chasing the Baldwin Mallet!

Welcome to Cumberland Maryland, Home of the Western Maryland scenic railroad. The former Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) 1309 , now WMSR 1309 was a powerful coal train built by Baldwin in the 1950s - H6 Mallet class locomotive. Mallets were built for the C&O as an articulating engine to pull long coal trains through the Allegheny Mountains.

The 1309 was then donated to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum in 1975 for static display. This is the first week of operating service since retired in the late 1950s.

What a grand Lady 1309 is. Beautiful restoration job.
Nothing beats the sight and sounds of a North American steam locomotive. British and European steam just don't cut it. Their whistles sound toy like.

Amazing locomotive!! Looks nicely restored and I love how they are running it with all the Christmas lights. I wish this was closer to home as I'd love to see it someday. Maybe when things get better. Cool that you caught the CSX freight train as a bonus. You had some nice camera angles which really made this a pleasure to watch.
