I believe he is talking/singing about mundane life without no alarms and no surprises. About conformity and against it.

I always thought it was about a person content with their decision to kill themselves... and not wanting to be disrupted while doing so. That numbness of depression, where nothing actually matters. And it's a catchy tune.

Yes this song is about suicide, there’s no other interpretation, he makes it very clear when he sings about this is my final fit my final bellyache. Going out without any alarms or any surprises.

It's honestly about not wanting any more stress. You're at your breaking point but still hanging on. Depression in a nutshell. Listen to the lyrics they're deep af

I think it's about becoming completely undone, gave up on everything, tired just accepting what's coming, the last state of emptiness or something

I hear someone loosing it and taking hostages, the euphoric and somber feeling this song gives me just feels like cutting loose and knowing you’re cooked when the consequences come. The video made me feel even more so with the drowning device

"A heart that's full up like a landfill" means he's missing out on a large part of happiness: his heart is "full", the eay people feel when they are loved or happy, but it's full of garbage, so his happiness is cheap, meaningless, worthless.

I took his "carbon monoxide" reference to mean self-ending by car exhaust, but i suppose a stove could work if you left it burning long enough. It would have to be a really long time, though.

"No alarms & no surprises, " to my mind, is a reference to his frustrations with his life. Sure, he's thinking about ending it all, but I think what he's looking forward to the most is just the quiet, an end to the chaos, the "silence". If that comes from an end, or from something else (like a different sort of change), however he gets there would be fine.

Remember, he's adressing someone when he says, "you look so tired", but he doesn't reccomend self-ending for them, he suggests they take a different kind of drastic action, that they "bring down the government". This makes me think that despite his frustration, he thinks there is the hope for at least a little something better.

At lot of this song, imo, is meant to be interpretted multiple ways. His "final fit" and "final bellyache" could be the self-ending that he is considering, but it could also be the return of his mental health: those things aren't going to bother him anymore, because he's found the strength to make a change. Is that change "the end" or just "an end"? That's the ambiguity.

I always thought it was about Kurt cobain as due to his death (rip Kurt) in the song it mentions a pretty house and garden which could link to where Kurt was found dead.
Another this could be right is because of the lyric a job that slowly kills you as Kurt had problems being famous which he never wanted to be

I always took it as someone who had enough of life but then after the bridge the song has a turning point. Instead of killing himself he imagines a pretty house and a pretty garden and learns to be content with life as he has it. The "let me out of here" at the end signals he doesn't want to be trapped in a room that's about to kill him anymore (like in the music video he stops drowning in the glass container

This is also represented with Ok Computer as a whole. The tracks before this became darker and darker (electioneering an odd one out) and then after this he becomes lucky and wants to get taken out of the aircrash that is his life and wants to travel along life like a tourist and enjoy the little things and slow down for a second

I've always thought of it as preferring/wishing your life to be nothing rather than unfortunate surprises, of well, unfortunate events, when your life mostly consists of them it can become numbing, the only thing you can feel is more pain with each one, no alarms and no surprises, please.

I think it’s about a person who’s fed up with the sadness of life and just wants to live a mundane and boring life without the alarms and surprises of trauma.

I'm a smoker with a reason of misery and pain, I often face challenges and painful experience in my life, i turned to cigarettes and this song resonates with me, a dude who's turned into a smoking addict, a dude who lost his smile and joy

No way the meaning of the song is even sadder than the song

Me, my mum and my 2 sisters had carbon monoxide poisoning when i was about 7 or 8 i guess. No such thing as detectors back then in mid-80s. It feels like your head is really big and everything feels like a dream although i think it started off with us all having hedaches. Anyway, thankfully my mum called my 2 aunties (her sisters) and just said we don't feel well and they were round in minutes, called 999. Mum passed out and was foaming at the mouth, Sam almost fainted until Emma ran up to her and slapped her face (i'm not joking it was like a comedy moment) and all sodding 4 of us were crammed into 1 ambulance and stayed overnight in hospital. I remember hearing Sam screaming down the corridor in A&E cos they were hurting her trying to get the needle into her hand 😢 poor Sam. Thankfully we were all on the same ward.
This video has nothing to do with that but i have no-one to talk to so the internet gets all my verbal diarrhoea! 😊

It's actually a song about a man being unhappy with society

Most smoke alarms don't detect carbon monoxide, though they should.
