It seems like healthy eating has become a sport to some and a religion to others -- Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-free, Hormone-free, Pasture-raised, Sugar-free, Low Carb, Good Fats, Bad Fats.... It’s never-ending! Each thing when taken alone can be a helpful guide, but at what point does eating healthy become an obsession? Can the quest for healthy food actually be detrimental to your physical and mental health? In this video I discuss the relatively newly identified eating disorder of Orthorexia that is becoming a bigger problem in our health-obsessed world.

OFF THE COUCH brings you new and interesting Psychology and Mental Health information to help you in your pursuit of wellness, self-help, and life improvement.

This disease is slowly killing several members of my family. My 7 year old daughter is now stronger than my 13 year old nephew. Several members of the family have been hospitalized, each time they cut more and more foods to try to figure out what foods are killing them, but they cant see its the fact that they're down to basically eating only salads, and only drinking water.
My (once) growing nephew is restricted from eating gluten, dairy, rice, sugar, egg, soy, processed foods, non-organic foods, anything with any preservatives, anything with food coloring, oil that's not extra virgin olive oil, the list goes on much longer than I can remember. I'm not allowed to feed him anything other than bottled water, even the fresh spinach I buy is too toxic to feed him.
