Learn about the latest eye drop recall by the US FDA and some useful resources to help check if your eye drops are safe!

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has faced a series of eye drop recalls that have been shocking the healthcare industry. Earlier in the year, a number of eye drops were linked to severe infections, leading to devastating cases of blindness and worse.

Unfortunately, a new recall was just released on October 27th, 2023, and now an update came out on October 30th.

This includes generic or store brand eye drops from
CVS Health
Leader (Cardinal Health)
Rugby (Cardinal Health)
Rite Aid
Target Up & Up
Velocity Pharma
Walmart

This is absolutely awful! I use eye drops regularly for dry eyes, fortunately I don't see Systane eye drops on the lists. Still, I feel terrible for the people that have lost their vision to this and for the people that have died, this NEVER should have happened, I hope the families sue for millions.

Great tip: 30 day limit and buy new. I personally prefer the individual drop packaging. I toss after each use. I prefer waste of some of the product vs contaminated the multi use container. I have a tendency to
touch some part of my eye. I’m a CPAP USER, total dry eye post sleep, in addition to being 70 and my eye lid glands have atrophied no oil production is less. Oil production is is more of a dry eye issue than simply not tearing enough. A very cutting edge eye doc discovered this issue with me. So much respect for docs that keep up with changing care. So many docs get stuck in med school learning and concentrate on raking in the income as opposed to my brilliant eye doc. Tip to help glandular oil secretion. Close your eyes through out the day and squeeze eye lids tightly. Start with ten seconds and move up to a count up squeezing eye lids 30 sec. You will feel the secretion cover your eye. Take care vision health warriors.

Hi Dr. Allan...thank you for this important video. As an optician here in NY I am frequently asked about using eyedrops. I, too, use drops for dry eye. It should be incumbent upon these national chains to monitor the safety of their products and act accordingly when the FDA finds health issues with them.

I was upset when my newspaper said 26 eye drops were unsafe, but didn’t list which ones! Thank you for listing them and providing a good website. I like the refresh in single use vials and feel safe with them.

I see this alot with recalls. Telling people to dispose the product.

Any time there's a recall and you have any amount of the peoduct you should be returning it to the store you bought it from or contacting the customer service and getting a refund. These companies are already not doing their due diligence...don't let them walk away with your money as well.

Unless something has changed about recalled products not being refundable.

I had a bottle of Up Up recalled eye drops in my backpack. I was completely unaware of this recall. it was after using these eye drops that I experienced a minor eye infection and then the huge, persistent floaty in my right eye. I'm going to make an appointment with my optometrist. Thank you for posting this.

I heard about this contamination issue months ago and what I decided to do is purchase my eye drops months before I need them and then check for recalls of the product before I open it.

Losing an eye or even dying is pretty scary.

I have severe dry eyes with an autoimmune disease. I need eye drops every few hours for over a year now. I usually try to buy generic items if possible. Thank goodness I never skimped on eye drops...only using the ones you have recommended. THANK YOU ❣💕❤

I had an eye infection from this bacteria. Scared the 💩 out of me when my ophthalmologist said that he was worried about saving my eye first, eyesight later. I was doing eye drops every 15 minutes when I was awake. Needless to say, I didn't sleep much
My insurance company didn't want to refill one of the antibiotics drops (VERY expensive) because I needed the refills too soon. Dr. had to fight with insurance for the drops.

I kept my eye, and have a small scar on my cornea. Because I am extremely near sighted, I don't notice it.

They should be fined and sued to non- existence.

Thanks a lot! My 92-year-old father has wet macular degeneration, and uses lots of eye products, because he's on one of those monthly-shot-in-the-eyeball protocols. We found two of the affected eye drops in his meds, and a third that was a safe brand but expired. I was also able to verify that a recently purchased Bausch & Lomb eye ointment really was manufactured by Bausch & Lomb.

So again, many thanks! 🏵💐🌹🌺🌻🥀🌷🌼🌸

Thank you for making this video. I had cataract surgery on both eyes which are now dry and using eyedrops. I enjoy learning from you. This is scary stuff.

I had Similasan Dry Eye Relief on auto ship (via Amazon) & recently received an email from Amazon regarding a recall alert on the Similasan brand too. The preservative, it said in the FDA recall (you can search it online) is problematic.

I liked the Similasan bottle as it was very easy to administer the drops, especially when waking up; kept several bottles on my nightstand. Now, I’m using Systane PF, preservative free, which is more of a struggle to use.

Crazy that we’re supposed to toss the bottle every 30 days. Preservative free drops are expensive!

The optometrist and ophthalmologist office assistants touched the eye drop bottle tip to my eye balls and eye lashes a few times and each time time it caused me great anxiety that I would get an infection. It is always important to have access to health care, eye care and vision care.
