It is not necessary for one to be rich and prosperous to perform an act of generosity, as one could make an offering within one's means and still receive benefits. What is relevant is the presence of wholesome thoughts associated with the act rather than the value of what is offered. When one offers something to another person, it is advisable to give it with respect and consideration and preferably with one's own hand. It is not appropriate to give things that are meant to be thrown away or to give in a manner that will discourage the recipient from returning to the donor for gifts.
