It's worthy of note that pretty much every major villain in One Piece has had some amount of backstory. Except for Crocodile. We know NOTHING about his past. Every time he's seen in anyone's flashback, it's always vague. There's definitely a reason this one character's backstory has remained shrouded in mystery for so long.

I think Oda is simply amused by the theory himself and is deliberately writing his story in a way where it neither confirms or denies it. He is a troll at the end of the day

Another possibility, Crocodile is related to or knew Luffys mom, and it wasn't until Marineford when all the pieces fell into place leading to Crocodile having a change of heart.

Oda himself said that he chose some special people to give the signature pirate clothing such as the wooden leg (Zeff) and the hook (Crocodile) to special people. That means that Crocodile has way more to offer to the story if he is the selected pirate for the hook

Interesting theory and good points. Another possibility is that Sir Crocodile is Luffy's mother's brother. Who might have been her sister long ago. Which would keep the connection to Ivankov but it would make him the uncle of Luffy, not his mother.

I remember reading oda once said he didnt include luffys mother in the story because mother keep their child from adventures - would be kinda fitting, crocodile was the first to nearly put an end to luffys journey.

It's fun to theorize about who Luffy's mom is, but this one is the most compelling one I've heard so far

I always thought that Crocodile's secret past is that he used to be a slave. The revolutionary army has probably had a lot of contact with slaves/former slaves so it wouldn't be too surprising if Iva knew about it and maybe even was involved in helping him out in the past. This would also explain why Crocodile wasn't really hostile to Luffy after meeting him again and even helped him during Marineford. After all, Luffy had punched a Celestial Dragon since the last time they saw each other in Alabasta. And Crocodile saving Ace might really be because he hated the thought of the Marines and the World Government achieving their goal.

This theory of Crocodile being Luffy's mom is also really interesting though. I had heard of it before but thought it more of a joke theory before watching this video. Now it sounds a lot more plausible. I'm really looking forward the revelation of Crocodile's past at some point in the furture

A few additional notes that might be already spread around, but this is the second time I hear of the theory after rereading one piece after a 7 year break. We don't know Crocodiles full name. He is know as Crocodile which is weird considering we know the full name of all other original warlords including the super secretive Don Flamingo. Which notably wants to side with him or see him dead during marin fort. Additionally in chapter 903 page 7 we see Crocodile...on a page showing Luffys alliey reacting to what happened following hsi exploits. Right after a page talking about how he picked a fight with big mom the first named character we see is crocodile. Additional his birthday September 5th lines up nicely with Luffys May 5th and Dragons October 5th. There might be word play in those numbers.

I always considered that Crocodile helped Luffy at Impel Down because he does have some sort of code of honor, and over the multiple engagements he's had with Luffy, Luffy begrudgingly earned his respect. He'd never openly admit it, but he would be willing to act on that. Especially if it potentially benefits him (considering that fighting on Luffy's behalf is his best chance to escape Impel Down/the Marines)

I'm surprised you didn't bring up the haki argument. There's also the theory going around that Croc never used haki despite being a veteran Grand Line pirate is because he stopped using it after becoming a man to prevent Ivankov's ability from wearing off. This could of course be attributed to the possibility of haki not yet existing when Oda wrote Alabasta, but then why did they specifically bring up that he was rumoured to not even know what it was in the more recent chapters? Really makes you think

Crocodile is really interested in Luffy in the newspaper after these events. He reads about him after marineford when Luffy went with jinbe and Rayleigh, and then talks about going to the new world. Crocodile is also a very out of place reaction to Luffy’s 5 emperor news, the others are yonkos and strawhats close friends they’ve made throughout journey. Maybe oda just picked crocodile because he is a series favorite and we’ll never complain about seeing more crocodile, but it makes theories like this more fun.

The thing is that dragon being luffy father was forshadowed in a filler in which all the straw hats were animals and the animal that oda chose for luffy was a dragon but there is an another filler in which luffy was wearing the same clothes as crocodile and was an organization leader like crocodile so is it another forshadowing
