The Smashing Pumpkins hit, 1979, was almost dropped from Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness. Singer, Billy Corgan, set out to write an expansive album like “The Wall.” 1979 was the last song written for Melancholy.

These types of stories are always the best. The song that no one wanted ends up becoming the greatest hit.

Smashing pumpkins definitely one of the greatest rock and roll bands. Amazing the volume of music hitting different genres in their first 6 albums. They put out so many different genres and did them well. Which is stuff most bands can’t and haven’t done

This video isnt quite naccurate. I heard from Billy's own lips that he wrote 1979 as a poem in his car back in 1984 and he said the final recording of 1979 on melancholy, was him literally just singing that poem that he wrote back in 1984 in his car. If there ever was a rewrite it was only to the music or possibly the chord progression but never the lyrics

Album didn't really need to be two discs to be honest.

I love the album but have to skip this one. It's just too sad knowing I missed my teen years due to sexuality issues and depression. I really feel hopeless and old at 34 whenever I hear it 😢

I wish I could be 15-18 again in a world without religion. I'd be a much better adult now.
