Storm at Sea Paper-Pieced Quilt

The Storm at Sea quilt makes for an exciting quilt - full of movement all due to the combination of "square in a square" economy blocks and rectangular sashing blocks. This is a fun quilt for confident beginners and experienced quilters alike.

The angles on the blocks can make it a bit confusing to piece but by precutting triangles and elongated triangles I think you will find the process fun!

EQ8 has lots of features. The one most helpful to me is color/fabric/value swapping that allows you to see unanticipated results before you commit to them. Deb Tucker makes a Diamond Rec's ruler that delivers perfect results. I prefer paper piecing square in squares as you demonstrate. My machine has a starting and stopping sequence that secures the beginning and the end and importantly cuts the thread. It's useful when sewing many of these blocks. Also, a hot hemmer is also a wondrous paper folding tool...much thinner than the AAQ ruler.

Very good tutorial, thank you Nancy for sharing. The fabric choices certainly make such a difference. Maybe some time in my future I may attempt to do a paper piecing block.Again thanks. 👍❤️😊

I never thought of using glue when paper piecing. I also have never thought of triming my seam allowances before sewing (while paper piecing). I can understand how much easier it will be to line everything up better. Thank you fo these wonderful new ideas. Please stay safe.

I love foundation paper piecing by pattern trace, its great paper you can print on, tears away easily and is super strong but thin as well. Hard to explain but its the best paper I have found yet!
i own Pitcher's Boutique and FPP is all I do.

Hi chris Hunt GB - If you place your (2nd) fabric, then fold the paper back along the sewing line before you start to sew the seam - you get to keep your paper pattern to use again!

Nancy, you could use the scan n cut to help you creat templates for your triangle pieces in the sashing blocks. I’ve seen Lisa Capen Quilts use this method to reduce waste.

I have EQ8. Is it possible to insert your design into the program so I can see how much fabric to buy? I have already purchased the pdf from you. Also, you mention that the shades in the red, white, and blue was achieved from different quilter’s fabric choices. Is that because there are different manufacturers? Ex. Andover’s red and Kona red? I so thankful to have run across your channel. You’re an excellent teacher.

Ty for the help with this quilt.. specifically for the elongated block. Trying to follow pattern and the wedges do not fit. I will measure and cut mine bigger.

Great video Nancy! I just bought the e-pattern from your website and am going to make this gorgeous quilt. I love how it takes on completely different looks based on colors. I want to make it the way the large quilt behind you looks. Just cannot quite tell if you are using two different reds, and three different blues- could be the shading on my video. Can you let me know by reply how many blues, and how many reds you used? Thanks and keep these coming!!

So happy I found this, I knew there was a paper pieced pattern for this quilt. Two quick questions, can your pattern make a queen size quilt? Are you able to make the hearts will go on with this pattern?
