Who else is a metal head and just like the song and stumbled across vocal teachers reacting to it at 3am

David Draiman was trained as a Cantor in his younger years and has complete control over his voice. Watch his mic placement. It never changes. He might look and sound like he is screaming, but he isn't. The nasal sound is likely from the flu he had during this performance. He is very anti-autotune and was furious when he found out that Conan's producers autotuned parts of this performance.

I've listened to this song maybe 200 times now, watching different reactors. Everyone has the same reaction. They are awed. It gives me chills every single time. This is truly one of the most moving and memorable vocal performances I have ever heard.

I'm addicted now to watching voice coaches react to David's performance.

He was very ill with a high fever during this performance. He had to sit during the performance because he was weak and dizzy. I think that someone who could maintain this strength during a performance is remarkable. His voice fry is done anterior to his vocal cords with his jaw forced forward too. As you said: Wet fry. Draiman is a classically trained operatic baritone who trained for many many years to be a cantor. Do watch the actual music video for the sake of comparison. The close ups of him while he sings shows a very distinct change in the muscles he uses as well as how his glottal stops are softened so he can bring his breath through several phrases. It’s also a testimony to how well David can sing while ill. You’ll hear differences. For instance, he doesn’t sound as nasal or congested during the official video, but it’s largely the same. He is masterful. Thank you for the reaction!

Just fyi he had a temperature of 102 and really wasn’t at a 100% but still respected his commitment to come on the show and sing

I can confirm that all of David Draiman's voice is natural. I've been to concerts and seen and heard what he is capable of. Hell, I was thrown at the stage in a moment of crowd surfing. I had been in the front of the pit all night and was screaming lyrics right back. I was thrown over the fence and as security was pulling me back, Draiman reached down to give me a fist-bump.

I love this cover by David Draiman of Disturbed, I also love watching voice coaches listening to this song, the expressions on their faces just goes to show this is something special. I drive my family nuts sometimes, as I just have this on repeat and happily play it five or six times out loud, it just empowers me for the next few hours and very very few songs do that for me.

I did some research on the artist and he is from Brooklyn, NY, Jewish & studied in Orthodox schools thinking he would become a rabbi. As a teenager he didn't like the restrictions in school so went another direction but is trained as a Hazzan or Cantor. His girlfriend committed suicide when she was 18 and he tried to do so as well via heroin. After kicking heroin for good he worked in several different occupations until entering the music world. He has known sadness in his life which is often a great motivator for an artist. I'd never heard of him nor the group "Disturbed" until I stumbled on reaction videos. I was a teenager when Simon & Garfunkel came out with the original (I think I had the album) and always liked the song but this version gives me chills and stirs up emotions in me. I liked your comment, "It makes you want to fight for this man." The music video of this song is very powerful and well worth watching.

Disturbed and autotune should never be used in the same sentence

Any tuning done to his voice was against his wishes, he was sick/getting over a sickness when he was live on Conan

this remains one of the best covers I've ever heard and such a stunning interpretation. Paul Simon said he cried when he heard it.

This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon & Garfunkel sang to alarm us, he sang to give us a final warning. You should watch their music video version. It is as beautiful as it is haunting.

He was classically trained but would rather sing metal or heavy rock. One of the most powerful voices in all of music.

Paul Simon has been quoted as saying that THIS is his favorite cover of his song.

"his voice is very sad"
Man, is that the most accurate thing I've ever heard out of all these reaction videos to this song. Knowing some of his life story, you can definitely feel it in the performance.
For anyone interested; he's got great songs besides this one, including more covers such as Land of Confusion (Genesis), & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (U2)
Don't judge a book by it's cover, and don't judge band by their genre.

I've been singing for many years and have trained for many years. This song and version brings tears to my eyes. The arrangement and the voice are amazing. I'm honored to listen to such an amazing version. Hats off to one of the best songs I've ever heard in my 54 years

I have seen multiple vocal coaches say the rasp was done correctly without damaging his voice, but you are the first to explain it in any kind of meaningful way like you did. Thank you.
