Calculating A Fractal Dimension Using Only High School Maths

Minor Correction: It kills me watching this back but when I substituted the values into the right hand side of the equation I didn't put the brackets round the power (D-1) and I actually forgot to start with the p so its squeezed all in there making the power on the denominator look ambiguously like pD-1 when really it should be p(D-1) two very different things!

I'm sorry! (but not sorry enough to re-film that section)

I'm sure I did other things wrong, please point them out so I can leave a correction. We wouldn't want to go spreading Fake Maths around, would we?

a quote at the end close to my heart, for reasons that are unobvious...
"Chaos is but unperceived order; it is a word indicating the limitations of the human mind and the paucity of observational facts. The words ‘chaos, ’ ‘accidental, ’ ‘chance, ’ ‘unpredictable, ’ are conveniences behind which we hide our ignorance."
This is from the fascinating astronomer Harlow Shapley in his book "Of Stars And Men" published in 1958.
Nah srsly the guy was kinda pretty cool for someone born in 1885.
Delightful video. Especially because of errors. Errors are where we learn. Errors are thrilling.

Hey! Probably you won't see this comment, but I just wanted to say thank you for the good content you upload. I recently got involved with a physics project which includes fractals and your videos have been very helpful. Cheers from Bogotá, Colombia.

I'll be your friend. We can still do maths on youtubes though, it's a requirement! :-)

Many problems of carpentry and cabinet making would be solved with the 1/6 of a unit of measure. Our conventional western system of counting and measuring has this glaring gap when it comes to thirds, sixths, twelfths, etc...

I had always thought that natural selection produced everything, until I
saw the Nova video about fractal geometry. So, who "created" Loren
Carpenter? Just as people did not see what Benoit Mandelbrot saw, the
creators of this video are not seeing WHO created them and everything
else in the universe using, among other things, this concept of
geometry.
