There's a sound for Steve ... 'breathing'. And it's very disturbing.

"When should Steve breathe?" I like how this implies that Steve has never breathed air a single time in his entire life

Steve catching a breath after exiting the water makes the most sense

I love Steve plummeting into an ocean of lava and just sighing like he dropped his bowl of cereal

I love steve's robotic breathing, he sounds so unphased by the things that happens from witnessing gravel falling to succeding a MLG water bucket in the end.

I’m pretty sure they were gonna use it when entering underwater, and exiting.

I actually think the breathing after breaking diamond ore without a pickaxe is the funniest one and they should actually implement that one since it would be so damn rare that no one would ever even realize that it was added.

despite it being an unholy, cursed sound, the meme potential it has like you showed us is unbelievably funny

I unironically love this sound. It sounds like freaky, sentient, industrial machinery of some kind breathing. So COOL!

It's most likely an unused sound like the wolf howling that they planned to add at one point but scrapped and never bothered to remove.

They should make it so you can hear the breathing when a players behind you

1:58 The sound is definitely used during the End Portal activation. You can literally hear it slowed down when he activates the portal. No I’m not talking about when he plays the sound. The portal itself makes the sound it’s super easy to hear.

Fun fact: this and a ghast scream sound are the two unused sounds in vanilla. Mods use them kinda frequently though, so if you play modded you've probably heard both before.

Edit: apparently I forgot about the wolf howl and a couple others. The ghast scream and the player breath are just the two I'm most familiar with.

Pretty sure this sound was added early in beta and was meant to be played when you came out of the water but it got cut for obvious reasons

I feel like it'd fit best for when you've taken damage from being in water too long and then you get out of water before dying.

Man’s gotta adjust to breath through that beard he’s got back

Imagine if this sound only played while deep in the caves. That would be terrifying

I've seen mods such as Advanced Rocketry use this sound for the sound of the player breathing while in a space suit, but I never knew it was actually part of the vanilla game

I really hope this sound is never removed from the game.

After looking through patch notes I have confirmed that this sound effect is indeed the one that is used in the End Portal activation sound effect. The Reddit post people are mentioning was posted November 4th 2011. The End Portal was officially added in Java 1.0.0 with the sound effect itself likely being added in a snapshot prior or even the Beta 1.8 "The Adventure Update", which was split into two parts. Those parts being Beta 1.8 (released September 2011) and Java 1.0.0. (released November 18th 2011) This timeline lines up with the Reddit post. The idea that it was a sound effect for something to do with breathing is just people seeing the Reddit commenters speculating that in the Nov 4th 2011 post or just seeing other people nowadays who are posting the same idea. The first time anything related to swimming was touched since water was introduced was Java 1.4.2 which was released October 25th 2012, almost an entire year after the Reddit post.

i'd imagine it being played as steve comes out the water, you know while the air bubbles fill back up to signifie him breathing
