I have a Dutch Shepherd female that I got when she was only 9 weeks old. I have had experience with these breeds so I knew what I was getting into. If you get them young, socialize them a lot, train them a lot, and exercise them A LOT, then there is no better companion. You must have time for them because they are needy and aren't happy unless they are near you. Easiest dogs to train, but also the easiest to screw up. Put in the time, and there is no reason not to get one.

I love my Malinois. High drive. Love to play and love to work. Best pet I’ve ever had

Very solid advice. I think that the bloodline also plays a factor. I have to mals. One of them is very reactive with an insane drive (Ot Vitosha bloodline). The other is sweet and has a medium drive and he was bred more as a hybrid of a pet and a working line. I say before you get a mal, do your research and ask the breeder questions about the parents. Also meet the litter and interact with them.

They're great dogs, the problem is inexperienced people who purchase them because they see the military use them and think they're badass...which they are. But they require devotion to constant exercise and training. People buy them and throw them in a crate or leave them alone for long periods, which is why they become destructive and reactionary. Train them right early, be devoted to their development, and any of the 3 (Mals, Dutch or German Shepherds) will be loyal forever.

I bought a Malinois because I saw YouTube videos of them protecting owners. I jumped on Craigslist and searched for a bout a week before I got my first mal. On the first night, he broke my back door. First month broke my couch, not ripped a hole in my couch. Broke it. It was in at least 5583 different pieces. Then he broke another door. He got so bad that i did what every one else does when they get mal with out doing research.... I got another one lol. But now they are getting proper training and I’m working them multiple times a day. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Professional training is essential and non-negotiable with ANY working breed, but breeding is even more important really and truly. COOK KENNEL FARMS in North Carolina is where our female Mal is from and we highly recommend this breeder. They really focus on producing stable, healthy dogs that embody the best traits of the breed but that also make good companions . Our girl is 1000% Malinois in every good way, but stable and clear headed and affectionate and the best dog. Don't be afraid of this breed please, Mals are awesome, but find a good breeder and trainer and you will have the best dog you can imagine.

Don't buy until you have done your homework my husband owned a Mal when we got married loved her. I have Dutch Shepard he's very sensitive to correction if he thinks I have over corrected him he will bite . Lots of energy and very clownish I love him but not everyone could handle him.

You said the most important thing when it comes to Malinois. Time . I have the time and commitment, so my 3 yr old Malinois is a happy, awesome dog . The reason she is, is time . Can't stress that enough.

I didn't buy a mal one was given to me by a dear friend who rescues dogs.... he was living in an alley because someone put him out and I had just lost my 135 pound rottie who was my wifes best friend.... the mal looked terrible when we went to see him underfed and not happy but he was smart cause he was brown-nosing my wife as soon as we walked in and he came home with us and its a win win for both sides, he's napping on the bed with his mom right now and I have had dogs my whole life and he is a great dog.... but you are correct sir, they are a wee bit quirky

Got a Malinois GS mix and she’s great! Super hyper and is an escape artist but she’s super loyal and very obedient. She doesn’t like to be left alone though

I’ve went to a breeders to look a pups. None of his adults act like this. They were all calm around my three year old. It’s all about the breeder. Bad breeders breed bad dogs, period.

I owned and handled dogs over 30 years at rescue events, in shelters, and my own dogs through CGC certification. Since nearly NO ONE takes a dog all the way to complete even 1 * 6-week class, my view is that MOST owners should NOT get a working breed developed for military and police officers. It is plain common sense. And don't ask 'what are your thoughts ?' because NEARLY no one ever took a dog through obedience classes, or CGC, or rehab, or worked with service dogs as a police or military officer. Most dog owners lie, make excuses, and bluff. And the dog suffers because every dog is a 'lower animal' and property under the law.

I know enough about both breeds to know I want one but I will never own one.

Have a nearly 2.5 y/o Malinois. Currently serving a 10 day home quarantine due to going after a neighbor, tearing her jacket and may or may not have bitten her behind. Dog has been in training (socializing) for over two years we have now retained a top notch K-9 trainer that does not use e-collars or pinch collars. Love my dog but a lot of work and this dog is not for the faint of heart. Anyone considering getting a Mali has to realize they need to make a huge, long term (16 years give or take) commitment as well as a lifestyle change. Plus there is the expense. If you think you can sidestep the lifestyle change think again and you have no business getting this breed. We've had 2 dogs that were half wolf (high prey drive), a dog we rescued as a puppy from a wild pack of dogs and a 147 pound Leonberger, all at the same time. They all died of old age and were a cake walk compared to our one Mali.

Belgian Malinois are not for everyone! You have to be dedicated, disciplined, and active!!! You must be a leader!!! Beautiful and loyal dogs

You are telling the absolute truth. My partner is a Malinois and I love him so much but he's absolutely crazy and stubborn. I do still want one. 😂

He is a professional handler of dogs and advises to be very careful to get a Malinois. A normal person CANNOT manage it.

I think at the end of the day its dog specific. My malinois is more pet than working dog. I got into the breed expecting much more of a challenge than I was presented. He could be the exception rather than the rule. He was raised with an adult female malinois and adult male dutchy. Highly socialized when he was young, great with other dogs although plays too rough for smaller breeds. Dont fool yourself and think that you won't be judged buy owning this breed as a pet. Many people hold a stigma or perception of a malinois and their purpose. At the end of the day if you exceed your dogs need of exercise, mental stimulation, and companionship, you will have a great dog. Dont get this breed without knowing you could be rolling the dice on its temperament.
