——————

Today's video is my FULL "music theory for dum-dums" crash course! Music theory 101!

Look, I know most people don't think music theory lessons are as interesting as we piano teachers do... so I'm trying to keep this video interesting.

This is going to be music theory explained on a broad level, and all the basic concepts will be laid out for you in this free course.

Specifically, we're going to look at how music chords theory and music scales theory tie together to create a real SONG.

We'll definitely also cover chord progressions theory too.

That's the thing, we can talk about music theory for beginners all day long...

But actually showing you how to USE this within the context of REAL SONGS is what's going to make sense of it all.

When learning about music theory piano is definitely the best instrument to illustrate the concepts on. But what you'll learn in this video is also applicable to guitar, or any other instrument.

What we cover in this course:
- Music theory overview
- Melodies
- Scales
- Diatonic chords
- Chord progressions
- Finding the key of a song
- Major & minor chords

I had a math teacher whose motto was "Give Away the Secrets." And to my astonishment, he proceeded to do so in writing the clearest text on Vector Spaces extant. You have done the same, Corey. This is the clearest intro to music theory on the internet.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I'm 67 and have been trying to teach myself to play the piano for a few years now. I just figured out what certain notes were by going up and down with the Every Good Boy Deserves... and FACE etc, and wrote the names of the notes underneath the staffs (know that's not right thing to do and l'll never learn to sight read that way) then just learned which note to hit next and eventually it became muscle memory. I can only play about half a dozen tunes this way. I'd heard of terms like fifths and sevenths etc but it's never made any sense to me.
Then l found your video. I've just watched the whole thing and it's left me reeling. Its so good to have found someone who'll explain all this to beginners. It's a great base for starting to learn to 'do it right'. I'll have to make a lot of notes first so l don't have to keep going back to the video, but l can't wait to get stuck in. It's going to take a long time to learn all these scales but l'm determined. Thankyou soooo much for taking the time to make this video and for sharing your knowledge. God bless you Sir, in every aspect of your life. You're a treasure. 💖

Hi Corey. I'm a 76 year old woman and I'm learning to play the piano. I have a piano course I purchased from The Great Courses. I love Dr. Pike and her method. I have made progress with her lessons. I just learn to play the Lullaby by Brahm. My problem is that since it's a recorded corse, I can't ask her questions but I just found the solution. I watched your entire program and subscribed to your channel so I can have another great teacher to continue learning this great art, and make my dream of playing the piano come true. Your lesson is excellent. You're great at teaching the music theory that most people want to skip. I'm your new follower.

This is freaking awesome! I've put my toes in the water soooo many times but never felt the water. Now, I can see and feel the water. I am understanding scales on a whole new level. I can play sheet music but never understood the composition or reason why I would ever need to learn the scales. Self taught at 2.8 years and still ignorant here (laughing). Thanks for bringing me to an AH HA! moment.

Corey, I’m 75 years old and have about 10-12 years of piano lessons as an adult and this is the closest I have ever come to comprehending music theory. I’ve been very fortunate in my teachers but I resisted their attempts to impart theory. I’m going back to the piano after a several-year break and I determined this time I’m going to (a) learn to sight read better, and (b) gain an understanding of theory. This hour and a quarter was clearer than anything I’ve experienced. Thank you. I will apply what I’ve learned this evening and then check out the next video for the next level. Good job and I really appreciate it! BTW, love Lorelei!

Dude!! I've watched several music theory videos over the years...but THIS, by FAR has been the best! I understand everything you touched on...and you explained it so well and made it SO easy! Thank you!! After wasting a lifetime fooling around with guitars that I can not play, I just decided to give piano a try (I'm 62), and I wish I would've done this decades ago. The beauty of the piano, is that the keyboard is a virtual map of music theory, laid out right in front of you! Didn't think I was a "music person", but now I feel there is hope for me.

I’m 71 and actually blown away by your detailed explanation to most of the topics you touched on that have always confused me in the piano, great job Corey, I will rewatch this video over and over while practicing as I go along until I’m totally comfortable with everything that you so diligently outlined for us to follow along…thank you kindly!

I’ve just bought my first piano keyboard at the age of 52. I’ve been looking for something that breaks down the theory. I am amazed at how much you have covered and how simple the theory actually is. Don’t get me wrong putting all this theory into practice May take me years. So many videos out there that drop a major, minor, flat or sharp with no reason is just confusing. I’m 2 days into my journey but already can now find the scale of a note (albeit slowly) but each time I’m programming my brain and getting a little better. This video will probably be all I need for my first years to keep revisiting to grow my knowledge and understanding. It will be a monumental day when I feel ready to look at your intermediate class. Well done on producing a masterpiece “for dummies” that makes complete sense of a language that is foreign to most

I did piano for 10 years and ABRSM up to Grade 6, but was never taught why or how to apply any of it. You’ve done more in 90mins than ten years of didactic lessons ever did.

Lessons where questions were quashed and any love I had for music died a bitter death. I’m not exaggerating; my six year old self would sob at the keys where my teacher (and at home my mother) waited to rap my knuckles with a ruler for any mistakes made.

It was only after I joined a (non-auditioned) choir in my thirties that my innate curiosity and love for music was rekindled. After searching for some basic revision videos I came across yours. I cannot emphasise enough how clear and concise and actually useful your teaching is. Bravo sir. And thank you.

Corey I would like to say that you are an excellent teacher. I was so intimidated by scales/chords until I came across your channel. Thank you so much for the tutorials. Everyone can learn if they have the right teacher!! I feel empowered. Thanks!

You are the BEST piano teacher I've ever had. THANK YOU! So thorough and so simplified and clear. It literally just clicked for me - how to transpose - and I was SO MAD that NOBODY ever explained it this way to me BEFORE! It makes so much sense now, and I'm so mad that all this time it was this simple. THANK YOU, YOU'RE THE BEST PIANO AND MUSIC THEORY TEACHER EVER. I'm your biggest fan. 🎉

I am absolutely certain that at 26 minutes in, I fell in love with you.
Where have you been throughout my entire musical life..?! 😂
“Thank you” is woefully inadequate for your willingness to help the theoretically challenged 😂 🙏 🙏
