Perhaps "slow and steady" really does win the race. I've slowed things down in an attempt to minimise the tension that puts a cap on how fast we can actually play.

Hi Darryn, I've been following your updated throughout the year. Where I work one of our corporate values is 'Show your courage' and I think this particular episode demonstrates that. You've taken us on a journey and have shown that the road ahead may have been different to what we initially planned, it's not always smooth and straight, but can be rough, u-turns and forks in the road. You've shown as an elite player that the journey can still be, at times, difficult and frustrating and goal re-setting/re-think is a necessary way forward and that takes courage to realise it & own it!!! I sincerely hope there will be an episode (how ever long it takes) where we'll see you play at 200 BPM! Thanks for inviting us on your journey!

Good luck with the continued practice Darryn. I was wondering whether this sort of goal would benefit from how endurance atheletes train. Runners, for example, even if they want to run fast, often run a high number of miles per week, at least 80% of which is super easy pace. This builds their aerobic engine, adapting fast-twitch muscle fibres to slow-twitch fibres suitable for distance racing and avoiding over-training. Not sure if this is a concept discussed in the drumming world, but maybe doing your long slow singles for 30+ minutes a number of times per week, and cutting back on the actual top-end range practice a bit, would build your capacity more. This was a completely off-the-cuff thought!

Try changing your interpretation from 16th notes to triplets. Work from slow to fast, thus going from triplets to 16th note triplets while increasing the tempo. This will help provide the mental shift necessary for getting fast. I have no real explanation for why this works; I believe it helps with releasing the tension you spoke about. You're already a solid player.

Hi Darryn. Thanks for the video's reminds me good old Drumtech days. My question is some fast drummers as Gergo Borlai, Ronald Brunner and many mentioned practicing on pillows for speed and endurance. What is your opinion on that?

The next step is to incorporate your fingers.

Hey Darryn. Why practice pad? Isn’t it best to always practice on the snare if available?
