"Baldur's Gate is a fantasy role-playing video game developed by BioWare and published in 1998 by Interplay Entertainment. It is the first game in the Baldur's Gate series, and takes place in the Forgotten Realms, a high fantasy campaign setting, using a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D) 2nd edition rules. Receiving critical acclaim, the game was credited for revitalizing the computer role-playing game genre. The game allows development of the player character through choice of companions, dialogue choice, exploration, and battle. Featuring a reputation system, Baldur's Gate rewards the player depending on the choices made in the game.

Baldur's Gate was the first game to use the Infinity Engine for its graphics. Interplay went on to use the engine for other Forgotten Realms-licensed games including the Icewind Dale series, as well as other licensed D&D campaign worlds such as Planescape, setting of Planescape: Torment. The engine would later be enhanced for use in a remake of the game entitled Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, the first game in the franchise in nearly nine years."

I used to play this game in the 90's when it first came out. i am all about this game. so awesome. it definitely engraved into my heart and when i think of baulders gate it reminds me of when i was young and that is always the best feeling ever so whenever i play this i feel like im young again. one of the best games ever.

Baldurs Gate 2 enhanced edition and Siege of Dragonspear just came out on mobile recently, picked it up as a time waster and it's a awesome series. I like Baldurs Gate 2 the best, it's more polished, the party interacts more in banter, all party members have their own quests, and since you are a higher level your tactical character options start to up.

Dude you're amazing. You didn't play these games when they were new, but you've gotten into some of the most serious CRPGs out there. You give a really unique perspective, both experienced playing but new to some subjects, like I grew up with D&D so I didn't consider the rules would be hard to get the hang of. Yea, people griped about the ai pathing back in the late 90s. Hard to do back then I hear. Great game, still my fav. I'm 43, nice to see a younger reviewer enjoy this game. Even back in 99 when I played it, I was like, well, these graphics suck, but then that game sucked me in.

Hey Che, have you tried Neverwinter Nights? The first was made by Bioware (like Kotor) and the 2nd by your favourite ... Obsidian (like Kotor 2 :D )

Nice review. I'll Definitely look into this game. I played Dark Alliance and loved it, Played BGDA2 and hated it for some reason... It seemed too easy or something.

hi what kind of monitor har you playing on? when i try playing the original on my widescreen it will stretch out the picture making it look horrible. The way it looks here i could accept to be honest.

I think you should play the sequel and all the expansion packs. A crpg lover like you should finish the entire series. you will love how the story progresses

You really have to try Baldurs Gate 2, most people think its much better than the first game and it recently got a expanded edition.

I don't know if you've done reviews of them already, but Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Planescape: Torment, Temple of Elemental Evil, Anachronox, Syndicate and Pool of Radiance are some other old CRPGs you might enjoy taking a look at. I could give you a lot more too, but then you'd need MS DOS, Amiga or even C64 emulation, which I'm not sure if you're doing. If you get an Amiga emulator going though I'd recommend starting with Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn and The Dark Queen of Krynn. Those three were some of the first CRPGs I ever played, all the way back in the early 90s. And I still think they're great. Obviously the graphics aren't too amazing, but the game play is.

The only thing bad about this game is the long walking from entrance to center of town and you gotta do that all the time.

Terrible feature, other than that its a ok game even through the quests are hard to manage when you have 10 of em.

You should try BGII: Shadows of Amn. It is by far a better game (storywise).
