Nail tech here - yes, acetone is very drying to the skin, which is why I always apply cuticle oil at the end of each service. I also advise my client to apply cuticle oils. I think it’s a good habit to have even if you don’t get your nails done. With all the hand washing and alcohol in sanitizers, cuticle oils help give your nails and skin the needed moisture to avoid brittle nails & hangnails. Also, most nail lamps are LED. If your nail tech is curing your nails for 30-60sec, they are using an LED lamp. UV lamps require a longer cure time. Like Dr. dray explained in her video, the exposure in an LED lamp is less than a UV lamp. When I was in school to get my license, the instructor explained the UV rays in LED lamps is not the same as the UV rays in a tanning bed, which is why the potential risk to skin cancer is very minimal and nowhere near as high as a tanning bed. A good nail tech will remove gels the correct way. Your nails should not be brittle and damaged at the end of your service, unless it’s hereditary. Some people, regardless of how they care for their nails, have proper removal and apply cuticle oils and take vitamins, are still prone to brittle nails due to their genetics. Just thought I’d share some info from my own personal experience as a nail tech! Like Dr Dray also noted - DO YOUR RESEARCH! Ask your nail tech’s the products they use and don’t be afraid to ask questions. I encourage all my clients to ask questions, especially for first time clients. I explain the service and what each product is. At the end of the day, you are a paying customer and a professional nail tech will answer your questions 😊💅🏼✨ hope this helps! 💖 PS. Don’t pick off your gel polish or any kind of nail enhancements. You’re just damaging your own nails 😭

I will never do gel manicure again. My nails were extremely fragile afterwards and took over 5 months before my nails came back to normal.

Did you know that regular nail polish is considered a hazardous material? Don't ever throw out nail polish in your garbage because it contaminates the water supply. Take it to a paint disposal area in your city or remove the cap and let it completely dry before replacing the cap and throwing it in the trash.

I carry a hand cream with sunscreen in my bag because of washing my hands, and I use my anti aging skin care on them when I do my skin care morning and night 😀

I suggest looking into CND Shellac polish, it cures with CND LED lamp and is very easy to remove without lengthy exposure to remover and no scraping or roughing up nail bed required.Their Solar nail oil is also very good. I ‘DIY ‘ with 50 SPF and UV gloves... I also do complete skincare on hands at night alternating Vit C serum one night, retinol the next... that has really helped....

Acetone dissolves plastics, so plastic wrap may not be the best thing to wrap the fingertips while they’re being soaked with the acetone. I think this is why people use foil instead.

I really liked gel manicures when I worked in assembly because they were really strong and acetone resistant. Which is really important when you're working with a lot of hand tools and cleaning up paints, glues, and sealants. It was the only manicure worth getting for a good while.
My nails are a lot softer than they used to be though.

Edited for typos.

Thank you once again, Dr. Dray, for such great information. I stopped doing gel manicures a while ago because I hated how the polish was sanded off my nails and I feared the UV lamp. I now know what to do so that I can enjoy them once in a while. First thing I'm doing is ordering a pair of UV gloves with the nails cut out. You are so wonderful and you always come through with EXCELLENT videos!💖

I got a gel manicure once and never again. The skin by my cuticles felt hot under the lamp and kind of burned on some of my fingers. The gel didn’t even last that long either, not worth it! Sally Hansen makes a great gel top coat that doesn’t need light and it last (even when painted over regular polish) without chipping for a full week for me!

I am not a nail technician, but I do nails for fun. A few things I want to point out. 1) Nail plates get flexible after you remove the gel polish not because your nails got weaker, but because air is what makes the nail plates harden. After a day or two, it will harden again. 2) Acetone is actually avoided by some professionals because it takes a lot of time (30 mins to an hour) and damages skin and nails. Electric filing is completely fine and even better ‘IF’ used correctly. 3) What makes your nails brittle and weaker is the technician’s skills. It’s way more complicated and difficult than it looks to remove gel (or acrylic) correctly. Unfortunately, most salons try to get things done quickly than correctly and some are less experienced, however.

Hello doc!! 👋 Video suggestion: what "beauty" tools to wash - when and why. I washed by hairbrush last night and it made a huge difference. I used to do it regularly but it slipped off the rotation! Brushes, combs, sponges, makeup brushes, towels, pillow cases.

I started wearing gloves over 10 years ago when i got my nails done. At first, the workers were surprised and kept trying to get me to take them off. I explained the reason why I was wearing them was to protect from premature aging and skin cancer. Due to the language barrier, I'm not sure they understood, but they left me alone but would laugh at me. I haven't had my nails done in a year due to Covid, and I think I'm going keep it that way. My nails are much stronger, and I keep them short with nail strengthener polish on.

Hi Dr. Dray, can you make a video about how to clean exercise mats? It’s not talked about enough how fungus and bacteria grow on the items. I’m also seeing a lot of opposing advice online about washing them so your advice as a dermatologist would be very insightful.
